when you go to buy new shoes for the kiddos, how much growing room do you all leave? dd has a tendency to trip, so ive always made sure they werent too huge. i went into stride rite today to get her shoes, and the shoe woman wanted to put her in these shoes that seemed really big in the toe. i went for a half size smaller, and the woman seemed disapproving. LOL. i was wondering what other people do? any good rules of thumb (er toe HAHA )for sizing?

As you suggested, I usually don't go any bigger than a thumb. They don't grow that fast, and if they do then they'll still need new shoes anyway...kwim?

Depends on the kid. My daughter wears a 13.5 / 1 and is 5 years 3 months old. She will often do a half size every 3 months.

I don't know. I generally buy very, very cheap and often have lots of almost new shoes to sell at the end of it. I do tend to buy on the half size.

I don't usually buy shoes big. I buy the size they are and when the foot grows by the next size or half size. My boys run alot and already trip over their own feet - I don't need big shoes helping with the reasons why they fall.

I go a thumb. My kids are not big growers, they've always grown slowly.

My youngest who is almost 7 wears a 12. My middle dd who is almost 8 wears a 13/1. My oldest who is 10 wears a 3.

I have never purchased expensive shoes for my kids. They only wear them for 4-5 months due to our long winters. For school sometimes I have to buy a 2nd pair but usually by then I buy them new school ones & they use their school ones for outside.

DS is kind of a klutzy kid (like his mom) so we try to get shoes that fit just right. If we leave growing room, it's no more than a thumb or so because he trips otherwise.

Winter boots we get a bit bigger, since he wears thick socks with them. It works out because he ends up wearing them all season long, and sometimes we get lucky and he can start off the next cold season with them.

We try to get good quality shoes because the cheap ones tend to make his feet smell horrible. Plus, he has very flat feet like DH (Dh wears orthodics and has since he was a teen), so we try to make sure his shoes are always very supportive and high quality. It does get expensive, but the kid is very active so it's worth it for us.

What We Do

We buy the biggest size the child can comfortably wear. It's obvious if something (shoes, boots, coat) is too large for a child to maneuver in. I don't have a particular amount of "room to grow" that I look for. We keep going up a size until find the last size before it's obviously too big.

Another one here who goes by a thumb's width

thumbs width? you mean as wide as your thumb? not vertical right? so maybe between half inch to almost full inch bigger right?

yeah i tend to buy half size bigger. anything more - they dont fit well and her heels come out.

plus my dd's feet grow fast. they have finally slowed down as she started going past her 6th bday. i dont buy her too many shoes.
