What kind of health issues would disqualify you from a homebirth?

Thread Starter
I'm seriously contemplating having a homebirth, but I have several health issues. (I've already had 2 healthy babies in the hospital).

hypothyroidism - controlled with medication, no problems
diverticulosis - occasional cramping
depression - currently on zoloft
asthma - under control with meds
overweight

What do you think? Thanks for any advice

Here in FL I don't think any of those issues would disqualify you. The only issues I know that disqualify you are:

Out of control GD
Too high BP that cannot be kept in check
Twins (here is FL they have to be born in the hospital)
Breech (same as above but good luck getting a vag birth in FL)
And when you go past 42 weeks here in FL you need to be turned over to an OB
And of course any defects in the baby that would warrant the need for a hospital birth

Well, I think there are 2 issues...what issues would disqualify you from a homebirth TO your PROVIDER and which issues do you PERSONALLY feel disqualify you from a homebirth.
for example, I personally have some risk factors that would make most PROVIDERS risk me out, but I personally am fine with my risks, so I choose to birth at home anyway.

I do not see anything on your list that should risk you out with a provider.....(I have heard some midwives are leery of the asthma thing, but you're a big girl who knows how to use her meds, right?). The overweight, you just want to be sure you get a fat-friendly provider...plus, it matters if we are talking like 20-30 lbs overweight, or like 100 pounds obese?
With the hypo, jhust be sure you are checking your levels, as thyroid meds almost always have to be adjusted (up)during pregnancy.

I'm overweight, I was 220 when I got pg and I am only 5 foot 2. Still getting an HB too, and neither my MW nor my OB has said anything about my weight.

It depends on the midwives.
My clotting disorder (prone to clotting in pregnancy) disqualifies me with some, and not with others.

The issues you have listed wouldn't disqualify you from a homebirth for most midwives, but as other have said, you have call and ask.
