Am I being rude? - Page 2

I don't think the "where did it come from" comments are rude either.

I'm blonde haired, blue eyed and have a DD with curly dark hair. I used to get that question all the time. I thought nothing of telling them my DH is a dark haired Italian with curly hair.

People are just curious. I don't get the big deal or the intense need for privacy. What does it matter if they know my DH is Italian? What does it matter if someone makes a nice comment about our kids?

It's such a rush, rush, private world. A little human interaction with those around us is nice sometimes.

Yes, it is incredibly rude to ignore a compliment. I don't think it's too hard to flash a quick smile and say "thanks".

Ds has huge blue eyes with the longest eye lashes you have ever seen ... everywhere we go people comment on it and have for years. I've never thought to be annoyed, we just smile and say "thank you". Ds knows he has beautiful eyes and I think he kinda likes the comments .. who hates to hear how beautiful a part of them is?

Just remember that even though you are hearing that comment for the gazillionth time, the person giving it does not know that. At least they are being friendly!

So yeah, I think you need to lighten up on this one, big time.

Lived through it -- here's the hitch

My oldest is another of the children with beautiful curly red hair. Hair was on of the first words she learned -- she'd pat her head -- because of the comments. Everyone commented and I'd say "Thanks." Now that she's a preteen people still comment and she says thanks, but she's also taken to wearing her ski cap indoors. I don't think she likes the attention much.

Although it was tiresome it wasn't really a problem until she was around four, when she'd make the inevitable "Look at that very fat man!" or "That lady has a big mole on her arm!" preschooler announcements. When we tried to explain that it is not polite to make personal remarks, she would (rightly) point out that people made personal remarks about her all the time. The idea that some comments are nice and others are not was a bit subtle. As far as she was concerned, they were just facts, like her red hair.

I experienced the same thing with my daughter, curly red hair . Of course I got stupid questions too like "do you dye her hair?". Umm, yeah, I dye my yr old baby's hair. But I digress, I would always say thank you and when she was old enough she started saying thank you. I know it can get a little irritating but I think it would be rude not to say thank you.

I am always getting asked if I dye my kids' hair, too! Their hair is white. Not blonde, white.

Yes, I have been dealing with this for 6.5 years - with both the first child and the second. We smile and say thank you or agree and smile. I do think it is rude to do otherwise.

My kids have super blonde hair which draws a lot of attention in my neighborhood.
