new to montessori!

hello all -

i am new to this montessori stuff dd just turned 2 and i found a preschool that will take her in sept, even though is about a month shy of their age requirements (now we just need to work on pling this summer).

i have a public school teacher friend that knows about montessori as they pretty much use it exclusively in their younger classes (although she is a music teacher and doesnt personally use it in her classes)

i just thought i would pop over here and see if anyone had any good info, things i should know or look for when we tour the school next month. (or any good tidbits that i can use when trying to get dh to cough up the tuition)

TIA

There's a good sticky post that actually has a checklist about what to look for in a Montessori visit. Take a look at that post. No school will have EVERYTHING, but it will give you a good indication of what to look for.

Also, check out this video from AMS about Montessori. It will also give you a good idea of what to look for and how a Montessori school will look for 3-6:

Thank you for posting this. I am very interested in learning more about Montessori as well. I have been homeschooling my son for five years and I also have a 3.5 year old daughter.

I am particularly interested in the math and language idea's associated with Montessori.

I loved the video you linked to and how calm the classroom was.

Do you think kids must be taught this "method" from a very early age or are there ways I can work with my ten year old as well.

Thanks for the information!

Great YouTube link! Thanks Matt. That one will be wonderful for helping my husband to understand why I feel so strongly about a Montessori education for our son.

Much better results if you start from the early age. But there are things you can try and just see how they do. Here's a good book about Montessori for elementary years:
