Granted that wouldn't address every safety issue or behavior concern (i.e a child that was downright phobic about buses), but it would a lot of them.

I'm not sure how many miles that would save you, but it's another thing that could help squeeze a little more time/life out of your current car.
Yes, it's the schools responsibility and blah blah blah. There's a lot of things that are the schools responsibility. It doesn't mean they're doing it. Nor is the bus issue the hill I'm willing to die on. I've got better things to fight for, honestly. My dp and I have already decided we'll be driving ds to school for as long as we can see. That's just a decision we've made after careful consideration (and seeing more than 1 local school bus run RED LIGHTS while full of children. Argh. My heart sinks just thinking about it).

Anyway, the school is less than 5 miles from my house, 2.5 miles from my work (I go to work right after picking ds up from school... I work at a daycare so he comes with me) and 1.7 miles from his therapy place (2 days a week he goes right from therapy to school). Since I have to go to work right after picking ds up from school, so the bus wouldn't be helpful there, and 2 days a week I have to take him from therapy to school the bus wouldn't be helpful there.... the bus really isn't a huge issue for us

I would talk to the school district about transportation for your son. They are required to provide special transportation for him.

Other then that, I'd save up every amount I could, pay it on the principle of the loan (you usually have to call or go into the bank to do it) and just chip away as much as possible.

The issue doesn't sound *that* bad, if it's still mechanically sound. Not ideal, but it's not at risk for breaking down. Sounds like a window or a door might not be sealing correctly.

I guess I'm lucky were I work because the special education bus driver's are the some of the best, nicest employees around. I do totally understand the not dying on the hill thing too, but honestly having pick up at home would save you quite a few miles. Maybe you should ask for reimbrusement for your miles?

Also as far as refinancing I'd check a credit union. I refied a car twice (simply because the prevail rates had gone down). The only real requirement was that I borrow $1000 of new money and that said money was not to finance a business.). I could (and did) deposite the $1000 cash back into checking and give the money right back to them.
