Moby questions...share your expertise!

Thread Starter
I just got a Moby wrap, and I have a few questions.

1) Is it "safe" to fall asleep with baby in the wrap? Like, say, on the couch.

2) My son is 6 weeks old, but I've been using the regular "hug" carry, not the newborn version. Is there any risk to this?

3)I find that he often doesn't like his head covered and fights this, but he's still working on full neck strength- any advice on this? He'll often fall asleep with his head about and leaned back, and I just support it with my hand, but that negates the "hands free" aspect...

4) How old should he be before we try the lotus carry?

5) Do you cook with your kid in the wrap? How?

Thanks!

I don't see why this would not be safe. assuming that you aren't sleeping on your belly with a babe on your front, lol. Go ahead and catch a nap, mama.

You mean his legs are out? If he is comfy, then I don't see a problem.

I would tuck DD's head in once she was asleep.

4) How old should he be before we try the lotus carry?
You should wait until he has good head control.

5) Do you cook with your kid in the wrap? How?
Yes, I use a woven wrap and put DD on my back.

Thanks!

It really depends. I've done it, but it's not considered safe co-sleeping. I'd be more inclined to try to snooze in an arm chair or a rocker or a recliner where I couldn't fall over to one side and potentially smother baby. Just be really careful and consider whether it's safer to take a nap in bed according to safe co-sleeping guidelines instead.

2) My son is 6 weeks old, but I've been using the regular "hug" carry, not the newborn version. Is there any risk to this?

No, as long as he's comfy and secure.

Try putting the wrap over his head once he's fallen asleep. Most awake babies don't like having their heads covered. Make sure you get the crosses of the wrap fully spread from the backs of his knees up to his neck, and that should help with neck support while he's awake.

4) How old should he be before we try the lotus carry?

Two to three months. He needs decent head/neck control.

5) Do you cook with your kid in the wrap? How?

Not with a Moby. IMO the Moby is ONLY safe for front carries, not for back carries, and particularly not with a small baby. But cooking with a baby on your front is not safe. Either you need to get a mei tai or a woven wrap and learn to get baby up on your back in a high back carry, or you need to put baby down while you cook.

Thanks!

I have slept on AmTrak with my DD in a woven wrap. We cosleep on a futon at home but I have caught a few 'zzz's in the rocking chair while she fell asleep nursing in FWCC.

I don't know what hug and newborn carry means. I used cross cradle --legs in with baby sideways-- when my DD was newborn, then I started using front wrap cross carry-- legs out tummy to tummy. Hope that helps

My dd was like that too, with the woven wrap the wrap is sturdy enough so I could have a small bit of fabric supporting her head without really covering it all the way. Then when she fell asleep I would pull the rest over her head.

4) How old should he be before we try the lotus carry?
I don't know what that carry is. As long as you can support your infants head with one of the rails you should be okay. I did front and back carries with my DD with a rail holding her head supported until she was strong enough to do it on her own.

5) Do you cook with your kid in the wrap? How?
I love to put her in a quick ruck sack to run and make a snack. Sometimes I use secure high back carry so she can really see what I am doing, I hope she is taking notes

Thanks!
You're welcome, my best piece of advice is to save up for a German Style Wrap like a Storchenweigen or Hoppidez. I am not sure if I spelled those right but the website www.thebabywearer.com should answer any questions you may have. They were my babywearing bible for the first couple of months
I hope that helps you mama!::
