talk to me about Dylon Dyes...

Hi everyone!!!

I have some prefolds that I'd like to dye for DD. I was planning on using dylon dyes.

The first concern I have is safety... should I be concerned about having Dylon prefolds right next to DD's skin?

My next concern is whether they work well-- I'm just planning to do solid colors, immersion method. Anybody have success with this?

I also have some plain white imsy vimsy bumpy covers I was thinking of dyeing as well. Do you think it would work?

I just want to keep it simple... not really wanting to mix a lot of ingredients/ chemicals. Hence, choosing the dylon.

Any advice or experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I've done a lot of pf dyeing. Emersion will work, just make sure all the dye has dissolved or you will get dark spots. I haven't had any problem with the dyed diapers next to DS's skin.
I'm not sure the covers would work. If they are made of pul, it won't work.

thank you Meesa!

I'll give it a try I think.

As for the covers... they have a pul middle layer with an cotton knit on either side. So no PUL actually touches DD's skin. Think dyeing would work??

thanks again.

If they are the Dylon Cold Water dyes then they won't work on PUL.

Their cold water dyes are a fiber reactive dye. FR dyes actually bond on molecular level with the cellulose of the fiber(protein in silk) and are a permanent part of the fiber.

If you happen to have Dylons all purpose dye, toss it it the trash and get their cold water dyes or head over the dharma trading.com and get their procion mx fiber reactive dyes.

I prefer the warm water dyes, as the dye lasts much longer than with the cold water. As for safety, I have never had any problems with allergic reactions (I would pre wash them a couple of times before use) but I have to admit I never checked the ingredients.

thanks everyone.

I'm going to give it a try in the next day or two. I know I would have better results with the dharma procion dyes, but I'm just looking for something simple, quick and fun. DD is 2.5 and will probably potty learn soon anyhow, so they don't have to last long.
