Do You Know Where I Can Find Audio and Digital Resources

Hi there,

A few months ago, a few very awesome members here at MDC had given me a list of Gentle Discipline books that I could get in audio and digital format. I, however, have lost them. Could you please, pretty please, provide me with some resources? You see, i'm blind, which makes it impossible to read the actual print text. There is a way to read it via scanning it into the computer, but it is very time consuming. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks so much for your precious time. Thanks a million. I'm really eager to learn all that I can.

I've got to run now, but I"m pretty sure that I posted part of those resources and can come back and search for it soon.

I also started a thread that I'll try to find and bump about audio/video resources.

My mom is blind, so I have a vested interest in tracking down audio resources!

Wow cool! Your mom is blind?! I always love running into other blind people or runnint into people with blind relatives because it makes me feel like we are sort-of on the same page.

I'm also thinking of asking MDC for permission to write a column addressing the challenges of blind parents to create more awareness and to provide resources for blind parents. I'd like to do it for free and out of the goodness of my heart. I want nothing for it. The payint I will receive is the many lives I will help enrich. I don't know who I'd talk to about that, but I'd really love to write about those topics.

Thanks so much for responding to my thread. I totally appreciate it.

P.S. Is your mom Affiliated with the National Federation for the Blind? I'm pretty active in the organization, as I advocate for blind people's rights, educate others about blindness issues, and provide resources whenever I can. I love it a whole lot! Knowing that I've helped someone makes my heart rejoice.

Maybe you can do a column for Mothering Magazine? That would be really cool.
I found the submission guidelines at the bottom of the main Mothering.com page:

I need the "ironic, hysterical laughter" smilie for that one!

Sigh, my mom has been blind for 20 years, but has only admitted in the last 2-3 that she's not getting any better. Technically, I think she was "low vision". She and my dad have steadfastly refused to get services from their local Federation for the Blind. (And it's my MOM who's refusing, not my dad.) But she's a child of the Depression and asking for help is somehow "bad".

Any ideas on how to knock some sense into her 80 year old brain would be appreciated! (In a very GD manner, of course ).

Not EXACTLY what you were asking, but awhile ago I researched MP3 downloads that were AP/UP and came across a bunch. Here's my list:

Connection Parenting for sale as a download. I'm excited because these are the perfect length fo our drives to visit the in-laws in Seattle. Which means my husband will listen with me.

I also found these free downloads (I haven't listened to them yet) :

Mothering Magazine Podcasts (they only have three- Mother Guilt,Allergies, Eczema and Asthma, and Teen Revolution)
The Living School has some on educating the Whole Child
Natural Moms Radio has regular podcasts- I listened to one on BPA in plastics last night, it was pretty good! Other topics include Natural Cleaning Products, Beyond Consequences, Attachment Parenting, etc. Oh, and Familia Libre- benefits of avoiding age-spatial segregation. looks interesting!)
Alfie Kohn- Teaching Children to Care lecture at a teachers conference (LOVED this one!)
Alfie Kohn interview about the Homework Myth
A lot of great interviews- including one about Homework Myth w/ Alfie Kohn,
Scott Noelle interview with Dayna martin about Radical Parenting (listened to it last night, kind of boring, IMHO!)
Speakers from the recent Life is Good conference, including Scott Noelle. You have to pay for these.

Well, you really can't blame your mother. I know that from most people's point of view, it does seem very impractical not to seek services, help, and support, but what I can tell you from her point of view that if she has seen before, she s not really willing to accept her situation. Or, if she has never seen, she doesn't want to be labeled for seeking the help and support. The second one concerning being labeled can apply for both situations.

Much of society still has a very negative and ignorant view about blind people. When you tell someone off the street that you can live on your own and have children, they act as if you said the strangest things: or, they treat you as if you are a Marcian. This is why more education is needed, and it is also the reason your Mom does not want help. She doesn't want to be looked own upon. That is what she thinks will happen though we know that is not the case. Whether you are blind and getting help or are blind and not getting help, you'll be labeled regardless, so it is better to get help.

What will help her is to talk to blind people who are successful. This will enable her to see that just because you are blind, life does not end. As a matter of fact, there is living to do, and life is too precious to waste. If you wanted, I could even talk to her. No, I'd not be preaching to her because that would turn her off real quick. I'd just causual introduce myself and tell her a bit about what I do and take a personal interest in her. Perhaps, it may do some good.

Thanks for your list, and thanks for posting in my thread. I hope what I said will help out.

Hey! Thanks for the list anyhow. I could use all of these, as well as share them with hundreds of other blind parents. They seem pretty interesting. Thank you.

I have a blind family member, too. She gets alot of her audio from the state library. The titles are sent through the mail and she returns them postage-free. She also got some machine recently that she can download tons of titles onto, but I think it was pretty pricey. Try your state library - they might have a program available. Good luck!

ETA: I asked her - the machine is a Victor Reading Stream and she gets downloads free from NLS and pays for some through audible (?)
