My twins are almost 2. In the past two months, we've really gotten regular with their teeth brushing. I didn't notice the correlation at the time, but when we started this, she also started complaining "Mouf hut!" (Mouth hurt) and would point on the inside of her mouth. I looked and saw nothing and ultimately decided she was probably doing it for attention, she often pretends to be hurt for kisses. The difference was she would KEEP crying/whining/comlpaining about it, and it happened in predictable patterns. Always after drinking/eating or brushing her teeth, for up to an hour afterwards. But each time I would check her mouth, I saw nothing.
Well, on another forum I participate in, a mother's son was discovered to have a low-insertion labial frenulum, which is the little band of tissue between your lips and gums, like the thing under your tongue. His was in between his front teeth and causing his teeth to grow apart. Well, I didn't make the connection until yesterday, a few weeks later. My daughter again started with the "Ouch, mouf hut!" and was crying pretty badly and was inconsolable for a while. I saw nothing in her mouth, but I had always checked her palate and never really under her lip. This time, her dexterity was developed enough, when she pointed, it wasn't in her mouth, it was in her lip. So I looked, and her frenulum starts between her front teeth and it is very wide. I instantly remembered my friend's baby. I couldn't get her distracted from the pain, even with boobie, her favorite cartoon, or her favorite toy, so I called and got her worked in with my ped, well, her husband. They are both pretty lax, don't like intervention if unnecessary. He did note it was large and low but said since it wasn't messing with her cosmetically, it wasn't bad enough to need clipping. He suggested ambesol or something and to just limit her teeth brushing til she is a little older, that it may loosen up on its own. I was ok with that, but today she is still crying about it. I hate the thought of her having it clipped, but at the same time, I think it's worse for her to have consistant pain with it, multiple times, daily, for how long?
Anyone have any experience with a low-insertion labial frenulum? I will bring it up at their 2 year check-up regardless, but I wonder what everyone else thinks?
Thanks!
