Our baby girl arrived on January 26 (Birth story)

Since baby girl is chilling with her Daddy right now I thought I would finally post her birth story.

On Monday morning I woke up shortly after 7:00 feeling a bit crampy. I lay in bed for a while and had a couple of contractions that I thought might be the real thing. At 7:30 Logan woke up so I got up out of bed. Randy had slept on the couch the night before because he was snoring so I went out to wake him up and told him Logan was awake and I was feeling a bit crampy. Over the next 10 minutes I had a couple of contractions that were definitely the real deal so we called my Mom and decided to head straight to the hospital since I have a history of fast deliveries.

Off we went to the hospital. Thank God the hospital is close to our house! I had two contractions in the car on the way there and they were awful. We got to the hospital at about 8:00, parked the car and walked up to the perinatal unit. They wanted to look at me in an assessment room since I had only been having contractions for about 20 minutes and I don't think they believed I was actually in labour. I asked them to please take me to a real room, this was my third baby and I most assuredly was in labour.

We got into the room and I got up in the bed so the nurse could check me out. I was 4 cm and I think this was about 8:10. They offered me the laughing gas for the pain which I quite happily took. That stuff is awesome, the contractions still hurt like hell but I just didn't care quite so much anymore. At about 8:30 the OB on call came in, checked me again, declared me to be 5cm and broke my water. I was a bit pissed that she felt the need to break my water less than an hour into my labour but between the pain and the laughing gas I didn't think to argue with her.

The doctor started giving me this big long spiel about pain relief options. If I wanted an epidural then I would have to have blood work done to check my clotting factors because of the blood thinners I have been on. She ordered the blood work just in case I wanted an epidural and I asked for a shot of Fentanyl. The nurse set up the IV and at about 8:40 I got a shot of Fentanyl. I don't think it did much for me, I didn't feel any different after the shot.

The whole time I had been at the hospital (except when I had my dilation checked) I had been standing at the side of the bed, leaning over during contractions and getting Randy to push on my back since all my pain was in my lower back. At 8:55 the nurse wanted me to get up in the bed to check my dilation again since I was feeling some pressure. I got one knee up on the bed and suddenly had this huge contraction that just pushed the baby all the way out. I did not conciously push at all and had no idea that she was actually being born until she started crying! There was a nurse standing behind me as I tried to climb up into the bed and she thankfully saw baby coming out and caught her. If it weren't for that nurse she might have actually fallen onto the floor.

So that was it. An hour and a half from start to finish and no pushing stage at all. I got one stitch and felt great after she was born. I thought Logan's labour and birth were quick at 2 hours but this little girl was really in a hurry.

We are of course head over heels in love with this little angel. Everything we went through to get her, the miscarriages, the 18 months it took to conceive her, the high risk pregnancy, giving myself injections in my stomach every day for almost a year ... it was all worth it. She is amazing.

We still haven't named her but we've narrowed our choices down to Lily or Poppy. There are pictures on my blog which is linked in my sig.

Thanks for sharing! I still can't believe how fast it went. Rub some of that on me!

Congrats -- she's beautiful. And, I'm pulling for the name Lily, although Poppy also seems appropriate now, doesn't it?
