Can we be shallow today? and talk about shiny things?

I know that when you have a baby it is supposed to be present enough? But honestly isn't it nice to get a little shiny something too? How about calling it a birthday gift? Anyone?

I'll even go first. DH is totally not one to buy jewelry. Last year we went on vacay and our travel companions were shocked that he didn't get me any little gems- the comedian that is my DH told them that I have enough rocks at home- why bring home anymore? True true.

so for my 'birthday gift' this time he bought me a new shiny fancy handbag! He took me to Omaha and let me choose anyone that I wanted- price be darned! And he watched the toddlers while I perused to my hearts content:

What a guy!

We call it a "push present." Dh says I give him the gift that is our child, so the least he can do is get me a little something.

With DD1, he totally surprised me with a Canon Digital Rebel dSLR camera. It rocks!

This time around, he had no ideas, and neither did I, so I still have a "freebie" splurge coming to me! He thought maybe a ring with both girls' birthstones, but we weren't sure which month DD2 would be born (ended up being Jan. 2) so he couldn't do it ahead of time.

I ordered myself a necklace when I was in labor DH paid for it, he didn't know it till later, LOL. But really, I love it, and have my two jan baubles on it!

We don't do the "push present." As much as I would love for DH to surprise me with something, it's not happening. Oh well.

I'd like a mother's necklace for Mother's Day, though. So far, this is the front runner.

It wasn't explicitly a "push present" since DD was born right before Christmas, but I did get a beautiful necklace for Christmas from DH. We never do much in the way of gifts or cards for one another so it truly was a surprise. Like all I got him for Christmas was a coupon book--you know, favorite dinner, night out, etc. blah blah boring.

It's been a tough year in some ways and we really went without a lot, not just money-wise but emotionally and physically. I think he wanted to do something that would just be a real "splurge" for me since we had such a rough time of it at the end of '08.

I was actually sort of concerned he spent money on something like that. Then I found out he got it from our favorite little neighborhood jeweler who has estate pieces on sale all the time for, like, nothing compared to the retail chains, and that he traded in some older stuff he had for it, like some old cufflinks he didn't want anymore.

Sometimes DH really is pretty great

And purses are great, too! I only have one really nice one, the problem is, I never carry it now that it's just been a diaper bag for the last 2 years, and I don't even use a "real" diaper bag, just an old school bag with our crap thrown in it

that's cute. I'd like to maybe start a real, grown-up charm bracelet, and get charms for my children, and special milestones in our life. But I want it to be a really quality one that will last. My 70 year old mother in law has one and it's amazing, she's had it since her 20s, and it's HUGE but awesome!

Totally not in your ddc - but around here we called it the "baby bauble"

And yeah, yeah...the baby was present enough - but the bauble was a sweet gesture on behalf of DH. Matching diamond earrings and necklace.
