My 2 1/2 month old dd is getting heavy (15 pounds!) and i'm really looking forward to carrying her on my back. when can i do this? is it when she hits a certain age or certain milestones?

You can do one whenver you are comfortable. It also depends on what carrier you are using. I had my son in a back carry at 2 weeks using a mei tai, later using a woven wrap. I use either a mei tai or wrap when they are that little because I like doing a high back carry, so they can be up near my shoulders and can rest their heads on the back of my neck.

when to do a back carry

I put my youngest on my back when she was a few weeks old. I used a woven wrap and made sure she was up high on my back with her head on my neck. The carry we used is called a tibetan. When your baby can comfortably spread her legs wide enough to wrap them comfortably around your back you can do the back cross carry, or use a mei tai in the traditional way. You can also use a sarong tied african style with newborns and up. Check mamatoto.org for goo video clips. Also you should be able to comfortably carry your 15lb baby on your front. I wonder what type of carrier you are using and how you are wearing it. The baby should always be above your belly button, held close to your body. You should be able to bend your head to kiss you baby on the top of his.
Good Luck
