Brokeback Mountain?

I just finished reading the short story today and I loved it.

it's actually the first Annie Proulx book I've read. I discovered her in the New Yorker when I read 'Tits Up in a Ditch'

She's a challenging writer. I love her portrayals of hard people in hard times in country, as disturbing as some of it is to me.

I haven't seen the movie. Should I? If you've read it and seen the movie what do you think? Is the movie graphic? If it is I might stay away....

Oh...and I loved the little anti - circ message. How did that translate into film? Or did it?

It's SOOOOOOO incredibly moving and beautiful; I'm sure it would be even more so now with the passing of Heath Ledger. The sex scene made me just a little uncomfortable, to be honest, but it's not graphic.

I'd definitely recommend watching it!

Don't bother watching the movie unless you have closed captioning. It is incredibly hard to understand a word.

I didn't find that to be the case, but then again I'm used to Wyomin' cowboys! I can see how Heath's character would be hard for some people to understand.

I can't hear any of it, either. I'm going to put on closed captioning and try to watch it again.

I saw it in the theater and I had no problems with the sound and hearing or understanding what they were saying. At least not that I recall, I should look back in old threads and see. I honestly don't remember anything related to circumcision, but it's been awhile.

I've only tried one Annie Proulx novel, The Shipping News and I gave up on it about 1/3 of the way through.

Oh, apparently that scene was not in the movie: http://mothering.com/discussions/sho...d.php?t=424945

I loved that movie! So beautiful and heart-wrenching. I thought it was very much like the story.

By "graphic," do you mean graphic sex scenes or graphic violence? I'm not a huge fan of movie sex, so I was a little uncomfortable with the sex scenes. But if I remember correctly, the violence was implied in the movie, whereas the book spelled out what happened.

....graphic anything

My tolerance for violence is zilch since having a wee one.

sounds like I should see the movie.

Thanks for the links Viola! that's a really long thread!

I found the sex scene near the beginning of the movie to be a little disturbing. It was quite violent, without any real violence. That won't make sense until you actually see it.

I didn't read the book but I believe it must be better that the film. I liked the film and it's worth!

I never read the book, but did watch the film recently. I had it on closed captioning because something's wrong with the audio on my TV and I have to use CC on any movies!

Yes, the sex scenes were kind of graphic, in the sense that they were kissing and falling all over each other and they made it clear that they were having anal intercourse (from the pants being pulled down, the positions they got into, etc.) They didn't show any genitals and I'm not even sure if there were any bare buttocks. Plenty of bare chests though.

There wasn't any mention of circ whatsoever.

I have both read the book and seen the movie. Both are absolutely excellent.

I disagree with PPs about the sex scene, I did not find it graphic at all. It was passionate, but not graphic.

Bottome line - if you enjoyed the book, OP, I recommend the movie.

I never read the book either but I did see the movie and thought it was excellent - very moving!
