Insomnia...help!

Is anyone else having really bad insomnia? Last nite I didnt sleep for even a minute and over the past couple weeks most nites I only get 2 or 3 hours unless I take ambien. My practice says its okay to take occassionally but I am at the point where I need more than occassionally. I am considering trying prozac - lexapro once helped with a similarly bad bout of insomnia years back. The doctors and midwives in my practicw are mixed on it, one gave me a script for prozac saying its the safest of the SSRI's, but the bottle came covered with warnings about 3rd trimester use and I am afraid to start it, and would prefer not to go the daily drug route pregnant or not. I have tried chamomile tea, valerian capsules, increased omega 3's, calcuim, magnesuim and b-6, unisom, benadryl, and several self-hypnosis sleep CD's. None help at all. Has anyone found anything that has worked or any thoughts on ambien v. prozac? If I didnt have to work I would try to tough it out but I still have a month to go and am a total zombie.

I take Trazadone. It's an older anti depressant but it's great to help with sleep. I have to take a 150-200 mg but My husband couldn't sleep one night so I gave him one (50mg) and he was out. He is a big guy too. Anyway, I talked to both my OB and my PCP and they both said sometimes the benifits outway the risks. If you are exhausted then it's effecting the baby. They say the Trazadone is less habbit forming then other sleep aids. You might call and see what they say. I also take Zoloft for depression. Again its a level C but it's better I take it then not. Hope that helps. I know it's not fun when you can't sleep and stil have to function.

Thanks for the info I will ask about trazadone. I think I tried that for sleep once before and had a racy heart but I could be wrong. Are you still on the Zoloft and will you stay on it thru delivery and breastfeeding (if you chose to breastfeed)?

Yes I am still on Zoloft and will continue to take it. I suffer from depression and deal with PPD so its best that I stay on it. I was on Zoloft with my last pregnancy and through breastfeeding(till 16 months). Both my PCP and my OB think it's a greater risk to the baby for me not to take it(not that I would hurt the baby but that If I'm depressed it could effect the baby).

I know some people think it's wrong but they aren't me and they don't have to deal with the depression when I don't take them. I am me when I take them. It is also hereditary. My Grandma, Aunt, Uncle all take anti-depressants(well my grandma passed away last Dec) and my Grandpa"s on both sides were alcoholics which is a sign of depression. I have just accepeted that I will probably be on anti-depressants for the rest of my life and I am finally ok with that. I has taken me about 7 years to figure that out and be ok with it.

My DH was reading over my sholder and he says that it's better I take them too!!!!!

Thanks. I am still holding out but havent ruled it out. I am going to try accupuncture next week, but I'm sure at some point, whether next week or next year, I will return to an SSRI. I still struggle with the idea of being on them permanently, though serious anxiety runs in my family like depression runs in yours! I read some research yesterday that indicates that babies born to moms who were overly anxious/depressed throughout pregnancy are prone to problems as well and pros might outweigh cons.

PS - my husband and I love your names and we're wondering what the genders are of your kids and what name you'll give this one (sorry if I missed this in a previous post)

You are so not alone. I've been battling insomnia the whole time. Last night I was up for hours on end, messin' off on here, doing facebook...just could not sleep. It'll come in handy when baby is here, but totally sucks right now. Hugs.

You sound like me... not only can't I sleep... but I have crazy heartburn at night.

For me, trying to get some sort of light exercise makes a world of difference.

Israel James is a boy
Ireland Jo is a Girl
And Iceland Brankin is a boy! I don't like nick names but for some stupid reason I have named him Icee!

If this baby is a girl her name will be Italy Diane and if it's a boy his name will be Scotland Heath. We pick middle names that meen something to us. It never started as a "theme" but has turned into one! We get a lot of funny looks but I really dont' care. They got to name there kids! We never find out the sex of our kids so we always have to have 2 names! Thank you for the complement. It feels good when Someone doesn't give you a goofy look!!!

I've been mildly insomniac, up until 2 or 3am unless I really try to sleep. Decided yesterday to an herbal sleep remedy for pregnancy. Found here: http://www.wishgardenherbs.com/index...dex&group_id=2 (Sleepy Nights PREG).

But this may only be helpful for those of us with less serious insomnia than you have. I hope you can get some quality sleep soon...

Thanks, everyone, for the advice and support. I went for accupuncture (and to the chiropractor) today and started taking some rescue remedy over the weekend - and slept okay 2 out of the past 3 nites without ambien or anything else
