Embroidering on a onesie-- question

I want to embroider on a long-sleeved onesie for my little guy-- do I just do it right on the onesie? Do I need to use waste canvas or anything? Will the color (green) bleed when I go to wash it?

DH does quite a bit of embroidery. he always does it on a piece of white cotton so he can stretch it in hoop thingie. when he's done he cuts it out w/ a little fabric left around the edges & sews it onto whatever he made it for.
That way if the shirt (or whatever he put it on) gets stained he can take it off & put it on something else.

A friend gave us several embroidered onsies when dd was born. She embroidered right on the onsides (mostly detail around the collar and snaps. I always wasned them normally (including at that time with bleach, which I don't use anymore). No bleeding, ever.

I just found this:

I'm not sure if I have interfacing or not. Sigh. Aubergine68, did you notice if yours had interfacing? Thanks!

I did mine right on the onesie, did not use interfacing. Using DMC floss, they did not bleed. I stretched it just a tad in the hoop.

I've done some onesies and t-shirts (like the inexepnsive boys undershirts) for the girls. I used a paper towel (because that's what I had on hand and I was anxious to start project) to reinforce things while I stitched. I tore away excess paper towel when I was done. The rest came out in the wash. They've been through the wash a couple times at least now without a problem.

used dryer sheets work great as stabilizer - and fit perfect in my hoop

i love those alternative stabilizer ideas!!!! i've used tissue paper sometimes for straight-stitch control on thin fabric, but never thought to expand alternative ideas to embroidery - cool!
