Letter to my ex-nurse

The letter pretty much sums up my vaccination views. I have only been to this Doctor's office a few times (my dd is only 5 months). We are now going to another Doctor. It may seem petty to write this but I really feel that I must. If you can think of any other points to make about vaccinations then please let me know! I don't plan on giving it to her until Monday.

Dear Nurse ______,
I am not one to speak my mind. I tend to use the “just smile and nod” approach when being told something by someone that I don’t agree with. But out of compassion I really had it on my heart to take the time out to write this letter and to share my feelings with you. It is pretty obvious that you do not encounter parents like me often. I have actually been involved in vaccine awareness for years now and I am extremely passionate about it. This was a subject that I began researching even before my husband and I started trying to have a baby. There is no question that vaccines have made a vast improvement in the health of the nation. But there is also no question that vaccines have destroyed families by injuring and killing babies as well. I am not naïve. I do not expect any medicine to be perfect across the board. Vaccines have and do save millions but it is at the expense of thousands. Sure, when you look at the big picture, thousands is nothing compared to millions. But when YOUR child is in that “thousands” then it is all of a sudden a huge number. Medical professionals and the CDC don’t care about the “thousands” as long as the millions are “okay”. If my child were killed or damaged by a vaccine I would mourn for the rest of my life. Whereas the nurse or Doctor who pushed the vaccine won’t even remember her name a week later. The safety of vaccines has such a sketchy past, I have no idea how you can back them so wholeheartedly. I can go on and on about the corruption that surrounds vaccines but I won’t. One of my biggest problems is that Doctors and Nurses back up and push vaccines like it is as safe as taking a vitamin. It baffles me that parents who question vaccines or deny certain or all vaccines are seen as being neglectful to their children. When in reality we are being the complete opposite of neglectful. I personally have read several books, read countless articles, and seen numerous documentaries on vaccinations. I seriously doubt that any of your clientele think twice about vaccinations. That saddens my heart in more ways than I can even say. Unfortunately those uninformed parents are the ones that must bury their children or deal with a handicapped child for the rest of their lives. I am saying all of this to let you know where I am coming from but most importantly to help you see through my eyes. So many parents are putting their children’s lives in your hands. From my experience with you, you have treated me like I was strange for using a selective/delayed vaccine schedule. Well, fortunately I know what’s right for my child and I stood my ground and did not let you intimidate me into using the recommended schedule. But unfortunately there are parents out there who are leaning towards taking a safer approach to vaccinations and those people can sometimes be easily persuaded. They will look to you for guidance. I am not at all telling you to start promoting no vaccinations in your office. I do not fault you at all for pushing vaccines. Like I said, they have saved many. I am asking you to stop being so one sided when it comes to the issue and stop being so condescending to parents like me who have nothing but the safety of their child at heart. With me, you tried to be intimidating and you started spouting off “facts” to make everything sound official. By the way, I (like many many other people) don’t need a research study telling me that there’s a link to MMR and autism. I have common sense. There was also no study in the beginning linking cigarette smoke to lung cancer. But we all know how that turned out. The truth came out too late for those people. Well, I refuse to be one of those parents who find out the truth when it is too late. Next time you meet a new parent that is concerned, instead of looking at them like they are crazy, you should commend them for taking such an active role in the safety of their child. Thank you very much for reading this. "

I think that was written beautifully

I think it needs to be much shorter and add some paragraphs breaks in. It was difficult to read and follow your thoughts clearly. I don't think they will finish reading it at that length. Overall I like it though!

I quite like your letter but I think I would leave this bit out. It is generally accepted that cigarette smoking increases your risk of lung cancer (as confirmed by studies!) but there are MANY studies that have found no link between MMR and autism. And none that have found a link. I am not a fan of MMR and didn't give it to my child but not because I think MMR causes autism. I really don't think it does.

How does "common sense" tell you MMR causes autism?

It's a great letter and send it if you feel it will have any impact. If this nurse if how you describe in the letter I'm not hopeful she will be anything but dismissive and defensive.

But if it will fill a need for you as well than send it! Good luck!

I had a whole explanation but it was getting so long. What I was refering to is when babies start developing autism symtoms right after the shot but it is dimissed as being not related.

I believe the point being made was that there was a time when science had not proven cigarette smoking to be hazardous to your health. In the same way, vaccination has (technically) not yet been proven hazardous.

I think it is better not to use this kind of analogy.
They have never proven that cigartte/cigar smoking is hazardous.

Was just clarifying what I interpreted Mommy2Teaganv as saying.

Honestly, I think it doesn't work regardless of the cigarette issue because vaccines haven't been disproven hazardous.
