| A brain and spinal column disorder, ADEM usually follows an infection. The brain swelling is a hypersensitive response to a prior viral or bacterial illness. The symptoms usually develop without warning one to three weeks following the recovery of limited illness — measles, chicken pox, mumps, influenza, whooping cough, herpes simplex (cold sores), strep throat, pneumonia, and others — or rarely, after a vaccination for these illnesses. Sometimes, they can’t be associated with any particular occurrence. |
