Your Baby's Care circa...1943

My stepfathers parents recently passed away, he came across this book that his mother recieved from the hospital when he was born. Thought you all would be interested in the section on genital care.

"the genital organs in babies of both sexes should be kept scrupulously clean with as little handling as possible. Boys should be examined by a physician to see whether the penis is normal or whether adhesions are present between the foreskin and the glans which should be separated. The physician will decide whether circumsicion is needed. Two or three times a week at bath time or as often as needed for cleanliness, the foreskin should be drawn back until the raised edge of the glans is visible and the organ then cleansed by wiping with cotton cloth moistened with tepid water."

I will be keeping this for those people who say, "well my father wasn't circumcised and he had horrible infections, adhesions etc..."

I know this is all info we know but I thought it was interesting to see it in writing and not just word of mouth.

I would be curious to know what a similar publication in Europe during that time advised.

it almost makes you understand why a parent of that generation would circ.

I have a book from 1976 ands its only very slightly better. Not pro-circ (actually kind of against it) and really great info..... to 6 months. says babies should be retractable by 6 months and cleaned meticulously. No wonder my MIL freaked when she found out we weren't circ'ing. She was incredulous that you didn't have to "scrub under there." (Dh was born in 76.)

Thanks for posting this, I'm bookmarking it in case anyone uses the 'they'll just have problems and have to be circ'd later' argument.

Ew, that's equivelent to turning a baby's eyelids inside-out everyday and cleaning them

And this is why I'm hypervigilant with older caregivers.
