There were circumcision consent forms next to my babies' bassinets in the NICU this eve.

It really creeped me out to see them there, like seeing venomous snakes coiled up next to them. They were just born last Friday at 33 1/2 weeks, so they are there for awhile.

I dealt with 2 different nurses, since they are in separate areas. The first nurse was a really sweet, older, grandmotherly type. She put a big "NO" on the form for me, and was going on about how "barbaric" and "horrible" circs are. She told me that there was absolutely no risk of it being done accidentally, but she was very assiduous in highlighting the "NO", and making sure the form was properly filed. The second nurse was very businesslike and not very warm. She wrote a small "no" on the form, and then tried to tell me that I had to sign it. I told her I wasn't signing anything like that, and instead, my mother took the form and wrote a large "NO" on it, like the other.

And then there was Wedensday when I had to go see my OB for a followup visit after hospital discharge. I was stuck in an exam room and kept waiting there for an inteminably long time. During this time, I could very vaguely hear the sounds of people oohing and ahing over how cute a new baby was, followed by the very vague and distant sound of wailing. After I got out, my mother told me that a baby boy had been brought in, that he was extremely calm and quiet and peaceful, and had been taken back to be circumcised, and came out wailing and screaming. So now I know why I was kept waiting so long to see the doctor.

I just hate having to deal with, and be around this sort of f'ng crap. I really wish I could have had these babies in a civilized country.

I really can't wait to be completely done with this OB's office. He has a really great reputation among the natural birth people here, but I find having to be around circs taking place in the office to be intolerable.

Once again, thank you for giving me a place to vent, and pray that I can get my babies out of there without having to go postal on the place.

They do circs in the NICU?! I just assumed when babies had to stay in the NICU, if the parents wanted them circ'ed they'd have to get it done at the pedi. I think I would have gone crazy if I'd been exposed to circ stuff when DD was in the NICU. More stress when you don't need it.

If I were you I'd continue to be extremely vocal about your beliefs. Maybe once they realize not everyone believes circ is a doctors gift to babies they will quit asking everyone to sign the form.

yes, that is very creepy about the consent forms. I would have wanted to take them and BURN them.

Congrats on your new babies! :

With my 1st son, the nurse asked me and at the same time handed me the forms, I told her NO, ripped the forms in several pieces and told her to not bring any more back or ask me again. She winked, told me good for you and took them back out of my room. With my 2nd son, the question was never asked as my Dr, knew the answer before-hand:

Please write a letter and let the Dr. & office staff know that.

Congratulations on your babies and thanks for keeping them intact!

I'm curious about what state you're in?

It depends on the NICU. My older son was a 32 weeker and the NICU he was in performed them right in the NICU. I was there for 1 of them and in the next room for 2 others. Really made me sick. Once my ds was in an open crib they asked about circumcision and I of course said no way. The nurse scribbles on his chart 'mom doesn't want' and you could barely read it. I wound up getting a red sharpie and writing NO CIRCUMCISION on his discharge paperwork. Got some weird looks but I didn't care. He made it home intact and that was all I cared about. He's almost 5 now.

One of my dds was in NICU 2 years later (different hospital). I was very relieved when they would send the babies down to well baby nursery to do them. But then they'd return them to the NICU right after and I'd sometimes see them doing the circ checks. Once dd was stable they put her in the transition nursery which was right next to where they did the circs though.

According to the nurse, "you have to get an OB from 'downstairs' to come up and do it." My OB does them in his office anyway, so I don't think that would be an issue for me, but I really don't know the ropes sufficiently well to know what the real risks are.

LOL! I guess that got the message accross

Night_Nurse, I actually live in Lafayette Colorado, same as Yulia, (though I don't know her). However, I'm currently in exile in Syracuse NY. I'm going to be living out here with my mom for awhile while I hopefully get a nursing degree.

susienjay, I don't understand why there is such a compulsion in our society to do this to babies who are so tiny and so frail. I can't even imagine putting my little guys through that, especially after everything else they've had to suffer.
