Moving to the area soon, need a good midwife!

Hello! I'm new to mothering.com and I'm kind of exploring what all there is here. I am moving to the Rochester area in a few months with my husband and son. I am looking for any recommendations for a good midwife who will support a VBAC. Also, is there a birthing center around there, or just a hospital? I glanced at the Rochester General Hospital's website and it looks fine. I'm just not eager to have doctors giving me a hard time about a "trial of labor" and whatnot. My sister-in-law already lives in Walworth with her three children. I'm just not sure I want the same doctors she had...

Thanks!

I was getting my hair done yesterday and I swear she mentioned something about a BC behind RGH (rochester general). I know there is the strong midwifery group that delivers at highland hospital. I'm 45 minutes out of the area so I used Thompson hospital. The nurses were really nice and supportive, but I don't like one of the doctor's at all, and he happens to be mine. There is one or two home birth midwives in the area if you're interested in that.

Again, the link to the aprochester group on the first page in this thread has resources for midwives.

Cool. Thanks. I'll check out that link for the ap group (although I'm not really into AP) and get some more ideas. I'm just so determined to have a VBAC!

Oh, and even though I don't live there yet, when we were visiting in December we ate at Red Robin with my sister-in-law and her three children, and they seemed very family-friendly. The chicken salad was very good, too!

I grew up in the roch area (victor/fishers). My sis still lives there and she has a 2yr old little girl, I'll ask her what sort of baby friendly things there are to do around there. She may even know of some play groups.

Playgroup?

Hi everyone. I'm on the AP list and was a client of Meg's when we had our first child Quinn, born on March 4. We were planning a home waterbirth, but ended up at Strong because our post-dates ultrasound was inaccurately interpreted. Had a beautiful birth, though, and our son is incredible!

I'm a SAHM in Brighton, looking for a playgroup to join on the east side. I'm willing to host at my house, would love the company, but I also think it'd be fun to maybe meet out at a coffee house, the zoo, etc..

Thanks,
Mariah

Hey to all the folks who posted recently! PLease feel free to "hijack" the thread, I'm so glad to have gotten one going!!! Let's all use this one as just a place to talk Roc. It's helpful to me to pick up on the info flying back and forth.

To all the "incoming" Roch-mamas, please feel free to PM me if you want. I'm always happy to hear from people, and will share any info I can on moving into this city that I've come to love.

Honeyhaze--- let's do that playgroup thing!!! Get in touch when you can, let's set something up

SAMarshall- Meg Grindrod is the only homebirth midwife that I've heard of in this area. I'm not sure if she does VBAC, but maybe some of the other mamas that have used her could chime in with that info. Either way, look her up in the yellowpages or online and give her a call. She's the best.

Well, I am super super excited to see that this thread hasn't fizzled out!! You ladies have made my day. Let's keep it going! Hooray!

I'm so glad to see some moms on here from Rochester! We're in Pittsford, semi-new to the area, and I have a 2 1/2 yr old. Anyone else with a kiddo about that age? I would love to make some friends for him (and for me!) now that we're settled in. I'm totally up for a playgroup also...even to host if anyone's interested!

calicocj - what sort of position did you take at RIT? I went to school there, and accepted a job there a few years ago that I had to turn down when I found out I was pregnant...(I was living in another city at that time and didn't feel comfortable moving mid-pregnancy). It's a great community to be involved in!

Yes she DOES do VBACs. I have moved south of Rochester and luckily haven't had to have a C-section but my dear friend who also has Meg had a C-section due to a breech, then 2 VBACs with Meg, both great births.

Do you happen to know how far she goes?

3 years ago she was still doing births in Wayne County, but when I called her last summer before TTC she's no longer coming out this far.

It is a faculty job in Sustainability there. I'm looking forward to the work, but terrified about the weather

Do you like Pittsford? That is one area people have recommended to us...
