And do you use it? What do you record and what is programed?

I dvr Real Housewives, Top Chef, Daily SHow, Dora, most documentaries I will miss, This old house, amazing renovation, and a few others..

We are finding its easier to sit down later and watch our shows w the dvr. OR we we will 15 later and start watching the recording so we can speed thru the commercials.

Battlestar Gallactica (for dh), Fringe, LOST, Heroes, American Idol (for me), Law & Order: SVU (me), House, Numb3rs, and Smallville (for dh). Documentaries, random shows for ds, etc., but those are our regulars.

We have two DVR's - one in the den (all family/kid programming) and one in our room (stuff only we like or stuff we don't want the kids to watch). For the kids/family, we tape:
Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Diego, Time Warp Trio, Martha Speaks, Curious George, Myth Busters, Dirty Jobs, How It's Made, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Wishbone, Little Amadeus, movies that we want to watch together (over Christmas, dh recorded the original Herbie the Love Bug movies), etc.

In our room, we record:
Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow, Lisa Williams, 24 (for dh; I can't watch it), Grey's Anatomy, Jon Stewart, and two kid shows (SuperWhy and Word World) just because only the youngest really likes them, and he can watch them if his brothers are watching Discovery shows.

Our wiring guy also made it so we can pull up the den DVR in the bedroom, and the bedroom DVR in the living room and we can have picture-in-picture, which was awesome during the Olympics. It's also nice if there is something I see on the guide that the boys would enjoy while watching something in the bedroom, I can easily set the den DVR to record it.

ETA: And, we don't watch everything we DVR on any one given day. We just record a big variety so the boys have something to choose from when they have TV time. After I wrote it all out, I realized it sounded like we watched A LOT of TV!

I felt the same way! DH contends we watch less because we sit down to watch the pre recorded and then watch, move on and dont do a lot of surfing etc. Maybe not around him but....

LOL! We do watch more now than we did when we only had rabbit ears, but I also think most of what we watch is purposely chosen. But, I do like to surf at night after the kids have gone to bed.

Oh my gosh I LOVE my Tivo!!!! I don't know what we did without it!

I only have it set for Jon & Kate +8, Big Love, and Judging Amy (which is no longer airing on any channel, but it's an old series recording I can't bear to cancel just in case it comes back)

DH has it set for Battlestar Gallactica and maybe some other "crappy sci-fi" shows (as we call them around here).

We do a lot of "OH! I wanted to see that!" as we hit the record button.

New Law and Order's (all of the series variation), NCIS, Desperate Housewives, Big Love, Big Bang Theory (love love that show), How I Met Your Mother, Two and a Half Men, Flashpoint (horrible acting but interesting stories), The Office :

We wouldn't be able to watch anything without dvr. We record:

-The Office
-Coronation Street
-The New Adventures of Old Christine
-Battlestar Galactica
-Big Bang Theory
-How I Met Your Mother
-Little Mosque on the Prairie

Pluse occasionally some Zaboomafoo if we want to let dd watch some TV. That seems like a lot, but 5.5 hours on prime time is only 4.5 hours without commercials!

We used to have a DVR and I miss it soooo much. We gave it up in order to cut costs.

I had it programed to record new episodes of all the shows I enjoy (House, Bones, Grey's Anatomy, Private Practice, Deadliest Catch, Battlestar Galacta etc.) I never cared when these shows were on I just sat down to watch them whenever I wanted and got to fast forward the commercials.

When we can afford it DVR is one of the things I want back.

We have a TiVo. We record How I Met Your Mother, Family Guy, Simpsons, Desperate Housewives, 30 Rock, ER, Lost, 24, Battlestar Galactica, Two and a Half Men, American Idol, Chuck, the Evening News, the Daily Show, the Colbert Report, One Life to Live and anything with RV in the title (just in case there is a cool RV show, but we delete most of these) We don't all watch the same shows, though, and I just record some of them in case I'm in the mood to watch something. We also record kids shows, although my daughters haven't been watching much tv lately, and when they do they seem to want to watch DVDs.

Part of what we get into with the TiVo is picking too many shows to keep up with, and then 2 or 3 will stack up, but eventually the networks take a break and show re-runs, so we catch up at that point. We almost never watch live tv anymore, and that's part of why I wanted to start recording the news.

We love our DVR, too. DH gets it free because he works for the cable company. Otherwise all of these ridiculous cable channels we have would be totally cut out of our budget.

Anyway, in our living room we tape stuff for the kids--Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Dora, Diego, Wonder Pets, Imagination Movers, Ni-Hao Kailan, Backyardigans, and Little Einsteins. I need some variety in my kids' programming or I'll go crazy watching the same thing over and over. For me we tape Survivor and The Amazing Race, which DH pretends he's not interested in but then often gets sucked into them anyway while I'm watching.

Downstairs in our finished basement, which is where the BIG TV lives and thus where DH prefers to watch television, we tape his stuff--Battlestar Galactica, Stargate, Stargate Atlantis, Dr. Who, and probably a bunch of other stuff I've never bothered to learn the names of.

Downstairs we also DVR the shows we watch together--The Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, Two and a Half Men, Heroes, Lost, Chuck.... I'm sure I'm forgetting some.

Without the DVR, I'd never be able to keep up with TV shows. I'm always forgetting what time they are on or what channel, or the kids haven't gone to bed yet so I can't start watching on time or whatever. It's nice not to have to watch the clock in order to keep on TV's schedule.

We have a DVR and we tape Dr. Who, Battlestar Galactica, Survivor, Biggest Loser and Big Brother. Everything else is "if we happen to catch it great, if not no big deal"

Not quite, but my partner records live tv through Windows Media Center, which is basically the same thing. He just has to burn it onto a re-writeable dvd before we can watch.

We haven't set up anything to consistently record this season. We really need to . . . we keep missing things and then only being able to watch them online, which sucks.

in addition to everything else everyone already said we also DVR stuff like new years eve so the kids (and I!) can do the count down 1/1 *and* not have to stay up all night LOL

We have DVR, and YES, we use it constantly. We actually have only 6% of our memory available right now because we have sooo many movies and shows recorded that we haven't watched yet. I go through the Guide for days and days ahead of time and record anything that looks interesting. I really get a lot of use out of it. The regular shows that I record are 48 Hours, 20/20, 48 Hours Hard Evidence, Top Chef, Secret Life of the American Teenager, and American Idol.

best thing we ever got for tv viewing. no more being stuck on the schedules of the people who program television.

Love the DVR, hate commericals. We use it because all our favorite stuff is opposite each other. They just moved things around so our favorites are 3 deep on Mondays so now we have to catch 1 online. Ridiculous, that's what we are.

I'm far too cheap to add another receiver, though, everything is too expensive here for that, and the rest of the week there are no major conflicts. We do House, Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, CSI, Fringe, Chuck, Heroes, Medium, Bones, 2 1/2 Men, Law and Order, The Mentalist, Psych and Monk, and Food Detectives. Sometimes we record movies and true crime shows too, but we delete a lot of stuff without watching because we don't have time for it all.

Oh, and Letterman. Gotta have Letterman. I've grown up and grown old with Dave, it seems.
