Wow! I can't believe it's already been 12 days! I am really losing track of time!
In terms of more details, from my other babies, I never would have guessed things would have gone the way they did this time. I had contractions off and on for a few weeks before labor started, so I was expecting something longer from that as well. Thursday evening, my best friend came from Louisville since they didn't have power because of the big ice storm there.
Friday, I got up and went to work as usual. I mentioned to my boss that I didn't think I'd be there the next week, so not to be surprised. I came home made spaghetti for dinner and was very tired so I went to lay down around 9. No contractions or anything at this point.
At 11, I got up to use the bathroom and my underwear was damp, but I wasn't 100% sure if it was my water or not (water didn't break until birth with other babies). I called DH who put some towels under me just in case. At 11:15, I was sure

. Strong contractions started almost immediately and DH paged the dr. He put my bag in the car, paged the dr again and woke my friend up. I came downstairs and lay on the sofa for a bit. Contractions were strong and every 4-5 min at this point. DH paged dr again and we decided that we couldn't wait any longer, so we left for the hospital.
Because it was the middle of the night we had to go through the er. We had some trouble getting much attention (Fri night at the er

, but finally got wheeled to L&D at 12:45ish. They announced on arrival that I was a "stop and drop" (I'd never heard THAT before!) and needed help asap. Somehow, I got out of the wheelchair and undressed in virtually one movement. I was 7 cm and 90%, 0 station at this point. There was obviously no time for anything other than delivering the baby. They did hook me up to a fetal monitor, but said I could pretty much lay/move however I wanted. By this time the contractions were terrible and nothing I did helped. The hospital ob wanted to check me again, but I couldn't open my legs as the contractions were so hard and fast. The veteran nurse (CNMW?) told him to forget it because the baby was coming.

My ob finally showed up (apparently the paging system was down) and let dh put on gloves to "catch". The nurses were great helping me figure out what to do. I was able to catch my breath at some point and they said it was time to push. My crazy thought at this point was that pushing would be the only way to get the baby out and feel better...duh! So there were 4 big pushes, then a push for the head and a last push for the baby's body. Sigh. DH got to catch the baby and Asa immediately cried and I got to hold him while DH cut the cord. Once I stopped shaking so badly, I was able to nurse Asa and he latched on like a pro.
All in all, it went well. Just not at all the way I expected!
