I'd like to watch some of the "classics." DH says he'll watch with me and mentioned Katherine Hepburn and/or Bogart.

Any favorites?

Thanks!

I'm a big fan of Rebecca- an Alfred Hitchcock movie from 1940. It's actually the only Hitchcock to win an Oscar (I think!)

For what it's worth, the book is worth a read as well!

The African Queen stars both Hepburn and Bogart. An absolute black and white classic!

Philadelphia Story -- Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant, James Stewart. Very funny movie.

Ooh. Adam's Rib is another Katharine Hepburn movie, with Spencer Tracy. Interesting look at equal rights and gender roles couched in a comedy.

Wow, you all are fast! Thank you!

I second Rebecca! Also: Some Like It Hot, anything with Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn together - they had amazing comedic chemistry! To Kill a Mockingbird, Streetcar Named Desire

Also definitely try to get a movie from the 30's like It Happened One Night or The Divorcee.

And if you haven't seen Gone With The Wind... well, even though it's in color ('39 was the year that was introduced in films) it's absolutely a classic!

This is a list of 100 Must See Films of the 20th Century - maybe that will help.

Wait, wasn't Some Like It Hot with Marilyn Monroe? I thought Bringing Up Baby was with Hepburn & Cary Grant - I about PIMP at that movie.

One I've wanted to see for years is Witness For The Prosecution. My DH and dad both loved it - and I can't think of any other movie they both loved.

Oh, I guess that was unclear! I meant Some Like It Hot (semi-colon) and any movie with Grant and Hepburn. In fact, Bringing Up Baby is the very one I was thinking of when I said that!

The African Queen is color, not b&w!

(Still the best film ever though. )

Oooh, great ideas! I love the oldies. They make me all warm and fuzzy.

I'm a big Jimmy Stewart fan. I've been meaning to rent You Can't Take It With You for my kids for awhile, I think they'd really like it. Our family is just as eccentric as the family in the movie. I don't know if it's "a classic" but it's a great movie. Can't go wrong with Bette Davis movies either.

Patch of Blue is one of my all time favorite movies - starring Sidney Portier and Shelley Winters.

i have to second It Happened One Night

in addition to the films mentioned above, i'm a fan of Barbara stanwyck...i'd go for Double Indemnity if you like film noir/mysteries/Hitchcock. (in a completely different mood, she also stars in Christmas in Connecticut, my family's favorite December feel-good movie. it's sweet and funny any time of year.)

Oooo... Arsenic and Old Lace.... I remember watching that late at night in high school and just about jumping out of my skin at one part.... I'll have to find that again.

I LOVE "Holiday Inn." I watch it every year as I put up the Christmas tree and pretty much have the dialogue memorized. You can watch it any time, though. Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire..... doesn't get much better than that.

I like the funny ones: Arsenic and Old Lace, His Girl Friday, and To Be or Not to Be are to truly hilarious movies. I also really enjoy the Thin Man series and, of course, the Hepburn/Tracy pairings.

I really enjoyed Wait Until Dark with Audrey Hepburn. Very suspenseful.

I heart Bing Crosby. Holiday Inn does have a scene that was a bit offensive to me (the Lincoln's birthday performance) but it's the movie that gave us "White Christmas." Definitely worth seeing.

Now that I think about it, I don't think this one is in B&W, but Guess Who's Coming to Dinner is one of the best movies ever made IMO and it has Hepburn and Tracy and Sidney Pointier (spelling!)
