Oh yes... that is very true. The portrayal of the African-American housekeeper is also pretty stereotypical. I guess I've seen the movie so many times that I don't hardly see those parts of the movie anymore. I think I decided when I first saw it that those portrayals were more normal within the context of the time the movie was made.

Totally, I do agree and would never say "Don't see this film" because it reflected the attitudes of the time - and I actually think that the makers of the film felt pretty progressive, because the housekeeper is outspoken with him in a motherly but bossy kind of way.

But for someone unused to those kinds of portrayals I'm sure it's pretty jarring to see them, and I'm sure a lot of parents may want to wait to open those topics up with their kids, kwim?

I love The Thin Man. I have to second that one. Myrna Loy is the best!! She's funny, she's a strong woman and she never behaves- a totally modern woman in a movie from so long ago. And the costumes she wears- hilarious!

Isn't she great? Carole Lombard and Rosalind Russell are fantastic, funny and strong women, too, I find -- moreso than a lot of the modern Hollywood roles for women!

I love the outfits in The Thin Man but I my jaw truly drops at the amount those two drink! "Darling, there's an intruder in our bedroom." "Gracious, darling! That calls for a drink!"

So true! Nick and Nora are some wild party animals. But somehow they always solve the mystery and do so in some lavish hotel in their silk pajamas with martinis in hand. I guess for me the appeal is that William Powell and Myrna Loy's characters seem so fallible and I never associated that with classic black and white films.
