cool game to buy for an adult?

Looking to buy a fun, new game for my brother in law's birthday. Board game, box game (not talking anything electronic). Has anyone played anything new and worth tracking down recently?

Settlers of Catan is really popular.

Does he like funny games, serious games/brainy games?

Fluxx is fun, there is a new Monty Python expansion.

Anything that involves brain work is popular with me. Trivial Persuit is usually a good choice for people who like those kinds of games.

Apples to Apples is fun. So is Settlers of Catan. Others we enjoy around here are the various Munckin games, Iron Dragon, and for sheer silliness, Chez Geek.

Three faves around here:

Othello (the classic)
Quoriddor (really fun strategic maze game, and stylish looking IMHO). Kids can play, but very engaging for adults.)
Gobblet (a complicated version of tic-tac-to or conect 4)

We like Cranium and Ticket To Ride.

We spent yesterday the whole day at the board game convention, we love board games, it's a bit obsessive and geeky... :

I love Settlers of Catan, and second that it is a really cool game. I also have to throw in a word for Time's Up. We laughed the hardest yesterday while playing Time's Up. It was rrreally good, and it's on my list of games to get for ourselves (and we don't make board game decisions lightly in this house )

Killer Bunnies is wacky and fun, and it has a zillion expansion packs
We had a lot of fun playing the Last Word at christmas
If he plays in big groups often we like The Great Dalmuti, it works with few players, but it's more fun with a large group, and it's fun for all ages.
For something a little brainier we like Tribond.

I like Goth.. it isn't "new" really I have had mine for awhile, but it is definitely not mainstream, so if you can find one, he probably won't have played it.. Basically it is a trivia game, with different goth categories, poetry, music, literature, etc..

the music questions stumped me, but the poetry/lit questions I ROCKED.. you earn gravestones to go in your cemetary, and can "steal" some from other players.. but basically works like trivial pursuit.

My 10yo loves it but the questions are really too hard for him.. there is a lot of pop culture stuff that he just doesn't know, but he still loves the concept of the game.

It really depends on how large of a group you're playing with.

Apples to Apples is fabulous, but you need a group of 4 or larger - the more people, the more fun, but with less than 4 the game just doesn't work, IMO.

Ticket to Ride is our most recent purchase and it's been a huge hit. It's totally scaleable, it's just as fun for 2 people as it is for 5, which is rare in board games. There are lots of add-ons/expansions for it, but the basic game is all we have and have been enjoying.

Ninja Burger is always fun, but it is a card game, not a board game. It is also a game that is great with a large or small group.

For card games, I love Set, but it's a love it or hate it type of game (DH doesn't like it cause I consistently beat him).

My best recommendation though would be to find a local independently owned game store, walk in there and talk to the person who works there. They should have some recommendations based upon the type of things your BIL enjoys and what they have in stock. This is how I find all my games, I just walk in and ask.

Trivial Pursuit, Apples to Apples, and Fluxx are my three favorites, so I second (third/fourth/whatever) them!
