newbie question - re: larger projects

If I'm making something bigger (like a baby blanket or such) and it won't all fit on straight needles... will the pattern say specifically you need something else, or what do you use in that case?

I am getting a set of knitpicks interchangeable needles for my birthday this month (yippee!) but in the meantime I'm working on something that's getting too big for my straight needles... is there a trick to this or do I need to just put it away until I can use some long circular ones instead? Is this how everyone does bigger items?

Hope my question makes sense Thanks for your help

Yeah, I put big stuff on long circs. I have the knitpicks interchangeables and they ROCK! But--you might want to order the extra long cables-I think it comes with 16", 24" and 32" maybe--I don't remember exactly. I have the 40", 47", and 60" for extra big stuff and for magic loop projects.

Can you connect 2 of the cables together to make a super long one?

Not at this point although I know people have been asking Knitpicks to do that. If you get the Denise interchangeables, you can connect the cables. But, if you plan to do Magic Loop i wouldn't recommend the Denises because the cables aren't very flexible.

If you want to keep knitting, try wrapping an elastic band around the body of your knitting to bunch it all up and encourage it to behave on the needles. You can get up to 60" wide on a pair of straights, but I'd suggest using another elastic band as points protectors.

Could she put a cord on each needle and a rubberband at the end of eah ocrd to make longer needles? Obviously this would only work with flat knitting.

Yup. The knitpicks needles come with a little screw on cap for the end so you can make them into long straight needles.

Yup Like the flexible needles you can get. Unfortunately, the OP doesn't yet have her circs.

All good ideas thanks for the replies. I didn't know you couldn't join the knitpicks ones... my friend has the denise set and I knew you could join those. Good to know!
