I want a ring sling...

But I'm not crazy about the selection Maya Wraps offers. I want something cute, safe, comfy and not terribly expensive.

Any suggestions?

Custom Slings

You can mail your own fabric to Birth and Beyond in Seattle and they'll make you a custom ring sling for $20. They carry a few designs on the website and in the store. I have one of their slings, and it's very similar to the Maya Wrap I had, but without the pocket. I bought mine off the shelf for $35 there. I found the tail long (the tails on Maya Wraps are quite long too) and I got my MIL to cut some of the fabric off and make a pocket.

If you sew at all, they're easy to make. You can get rings off of ringsling.com.

I have one (with a pocket, no padding at all), made by a WAHM, my mom passed it down to me. The company name is Batik Bum, they have a hyenacart and their own website. The tail is a perfect long length for me, and does fit DH, who is plus sized.
I don't know what fabric choices they have, but I've seen some really cute stuff come from there.

Thanks everyone!

I'll look at batik bum sometime tonight and I'm browsing the Birth & Beyond slings now. I really don't care much for Jan's fabric choices (I looked earlier today).

I do sew. What kind of fabric is used though? The finding the right fabric that will hold up and I like is what's stopped me from making slings in the past.

Did you check out Jan Andrea's FAQs? She gives some bits there about how to choose the fabric. I found it really helpful when I was looking for some fabric for a SPOC.

www.zingslings.com is wonderful! I got a Mei Tai from her that is awesome! And she has more fabrics available than what is listed on her site - My Mei Tai was custom and I got to pick out my own fabric!

be sure to get quality sling rings if you decide to make your own slings.

Linen is a very nice, sturdy and versatile fabric.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE babypockets (made my an MDC mama actually). She is wonderful and I no longer recommend any other ring sling because it is so much better than the other 20 I have tried.

You can see an article I wrote here and it includes links to her products and a bunch of other ones.

yes! SBP slings are awesome, and extremely affordable. this would be my first recommendation. other well-known brands are Taylormade, Zolowear, Ellaroo makes a nice lightly padded one, Kalea, Chickenscratch. there are about a zillion of them.

my favorite ring slings are ones made from woven wraps. you can usually find them on fsot at thebabywearer for around $50, very often they were slingified by Jan at SBP, and they are so cushy and supportive! i have two slingified wraps and they are by far my favorite ring slings!

ZOLOWEAR.

I have used for 3 children -- even to tote my 38 pound 3.5 year old -- packed great when we traveled to Europe -- SO great not having to use a stroller, yet have a way to give my child's little legs a break (and not worry about losing a wanderer) . . .

ebay is a good place to buy -- they are expensive new.

I have 2 in silk - 2 in their FABULOUS Solarveil fabric (use in the shower/pool or anytime -- the mesh breathes, dries fast, and provides SPF) -- 1 organic, 1 print in cotton stretch, 2 straight cotton, and 1 straight cotton stretch ------

Yep, Huge Fan! . . . These have been collected for 5.5 years, and I now have 1 to match everything (I never leave home w/o it!!!! :-) . . .
