Cover Conundrum - Reccomendations?

When ordering the bulk of my stash, I had never dealt with covers so I got a few different types, and my mom gave me a couple others. So I have dealt with BSWW, BSB, Thirsties, Cot'n'Wrap, Dappi, Batik Bum (WAHM), and Kushies.

The BSWW, BSB, and Thirsties' velcro tabs scratch my belly when he's not in pants (most of the time).
The Dappi and Kushies, I don't like the netting on the inside, and the Kushies gets damp through.
The Batik Bum is too narrow and doesn't have leg gussets, so it doesn't cover the diaper between his legs (but I love the snaps).
The Cot'n'Wrap is amazing. The leg gussets are nice and big, and I am in love with the velcro system (a snap on each side, and then low-pile velcro that isn't scratchy). I don't care about the cotton on the inside vs plastic, I could take or leave that. However, the cover isn't waterproof. It has all sorts of instructions on the tag of how to keep it waterproof, and I haven't done anything wrong, and it's only been used like 10 times. He's a super pee-er, he holds it for 2-5 hours and then when he goes if he's in a diaper with doubler and no cover, he leaves a puddle on whatever he was on (if I'm holding him standing sometimes I can watch it drip). I don't think this is a diaper problem since we have indian prefolds and diaper service chinese prefolds, 3 types of doublers, and a WAHM fitted, and it's pretty consistent. The cot'n'wrap just can't hold up to it, and gets damp through with his first pee.

Anyone have any suggestions? It'll be time for a couple more covers soon, as the NB size stuff is basically too small (I ordered half NB half S, so I'm at half my covers fitting). I'd like big leg gussets, and either low-pile velcro or snaps. Cost is a worry, but I know where to look for used, and I'm cool with WAHM.

I would think some good wool might be an option for you. Wool will absorb some of the wetness and a heavy wool cover can be bullet-proof for most babies. I love pull-on wool covers for being super-soft on the baby with no velcro for scratching and no snaps for wiggly babies. Another option would be Bummis snap wraps, if the BSWW work well at staying dry. They're essentially the same cover, just no velcro, and snaps instead.

Of course, a cover is only as good as the diaper, so you may, indeed, need to look more into the diapers you're using and how absorbent they are. Is the diaper soaking and then leaking? Or are there gapes allowing the urine to flow out of the diaper before it's absorbed? Could the diapers be repelling? Does it help to double up diapers? One option that might work well would be to pin/snappi a prefold on snugly, then trifold another prefold in a wrap. Does the doubling help control the leaking?

Just a few ideas - I hope they help!

I had just the same experience as you with the cotn wraps. Great fit, so soft, NOT waterproof. I couldn't believe a newborn baby could pee that much, but it was that the wraps weren't holding it.

I really like Imse Vimse organic cotton wraps. The fit is really nice and they are very comfortable and don't leave red marks on my super-sensitive babe. And they work. You have to pull up on the front and angle the tabs downward but I haven't had a problem with the velcro scratching. She's just growing out of the smalls at 14.5 lbs, and they still fit over a trifolded prefold barely.

Hope that helps!

Mother-ease? They have two styles, one with side snaps and one with velcro. They have leg gussets, they're full-cut, and they are the most bulletproof covers I've tried.

I don't know if the Litewraps are still around, but they have that same system with velcro and one snap on each side. They're cut just like the cotton ones you have, but they don't wick the wetness like the cotton does. I used them with DD1 and they were great.

A big second on the Imse Vimse cotton covers - I think they will be your more-perfect Cot'n wrap (I had the same pros and cons with Cot'n wrap, and I have ZERO complaints about the Imse Vimse. Having said that, I think wool soakers (like Aristocrats) are the most leakproof (as long as you lanolize every now and then) and absolutely the most comfortable for LO - nothing at all rough or binding on the entire cover. However, you can prob get several Imse Vimse covers (used or new) for the price of one Aristocrat (used or new).
