Sleepy newborn

Ok my friend just had her baby today at 3pm. He nursed well at 3:45 and then fell asleep. He has been asleep since then for the most part. Mom has been trying to wake him about every hour to feed. He latches and falls right to sleep. I'm hoping he has a good session soon. Any suggestions? At what point should she worry?

Thanks
Kara

The med. professionals will say he needs to be woken up...I can never do it....I just can't bring myself to wake them up....besides being born takes alot out of them. I just figure that when they get hungry they'll wake up and let me know. Maybe this is a bad thing...I haven't much thought about it....I just think they are tired and don't want to eat, and they'll eat when they are good and ready.:

If he hasn't had a good feeding by the morning she should probably try and get him going. My guess is about 1-3 in the morning his appitite will get going. That has been my experiance throughout my child bearing career.

Within 24 hours. Did she use meds during labour and delivery? if so, that could be why he's so sleepy.

Mom had no drugs. I am really proud of her on that one. It was her goal. I told the mom to offer one more time and then go to sleep for a few hours herself.

I'm sure Murphy's Law will have the LO up and ready to nurse as soon as mom dozes off

i am the mom with the sleepy newborn. nurse came in and tried helping but she is young and he started hiccuping. and she said wait till that ends. and thent ry again. so she left. i stripped him down to nothing when she left and woke up. and i got him latched. not the best latch as it should of been. she was saying it wasnt shallow but i could tell it was but i couldnt get more into his mouth. so hubby tried helping pulled down his lip for me. and i got him on. not the best latch but he was swallowing i could feel every suck but i know he wasnt nipple feeding. he fed for 10 minutes and then i took him off for bad latch and he fell asleep. i figure tommroow when the LC is here maybe things will be better. plus he will get better at opening wide. I am off to sleep for a few hrs.

After the initial wakeful period of an hour or so, it is normal for babies to sleep a lot in the next 24hr period. The nurses will never tell you this though.

My kids were all sleepy newborns for the first few weeks. I had to wake them up a lot because I needed them to nurse. Most times I would have to take their clothes off so they weren't nice and warm. Also, a cool wet cloth on their feet. I didn't want to do these things at first, but I was in agony. It worked out in the end.

I tortured my first poor DD trying to make her eat on my schedule despite her fatigue too. Just got me alot of stress and got her cold, thumped, pinched, and jiggled when she would have preferred to cuddle with me. After a couple days she woke up, and after a week I gave up on my own assumptions on when she should eat and fed her on demand, and we were both alot happier! DD2-3 have been fed on demand from the beginning, including letting them sleep the first day or two, and everyone is fine! I say, feed on demand, then your body and baby will be in sinc and everyones more comfy!

If you at a hospital...the nurses will want the baby to feed every 2-4 hours at least....so...i would do skin to skin as much as possible...when baby is ready to feed he/she will give you cues....as long as mama is on the look out for the cues...baby will be fine. Congrads mama
