dh and i are feeling very challenged by our 5 yo ds, who is HIGH HIGH energy , talks NON STOP (often very inane chatter which we are convinced is really because he likes to hear himself talk), is IMPULSIVE and GRABBY and really a LEAP-BEFORE-LOOKING kinda fellow. ds never stops moving, the only time he is still is when watching tv. even when eating, reading books, drawing, playing play doh - he is fidgeting in and out of his chair/my lap. ds is also incredibly bossy - we joke that he's going to be dictator of his own private island when he grows up. we frequently find ourselves exhausted and exasperated after a few hours with him. dh and i feel like we can't keep up with him - we feel really challenged to provide the level of activity, interaction and engagement that our ds seems to require. dh and i are slower and prefer more quiet, calm down-time.
he has been this way since he started walking, so it's not a phase. seeing him in contrast to other kiddos, we know he is waaaaaaaay more active, bossy and talkative than his peers. this is who he is. we love our ds but are starting to get worried that he will struggle in school and elsewhere if he doesn't learn to manage his bull-in-a-china-shop activity level.
help! we are looking for ideas, encouragement, suggestions, reframes. how can we parent him to help him learn how to "take it DOWN a notch" from time to time?
TIA - isis
