Anyone pregnant and still nursing?

So this is my first time being pregnant and nursing. DD is 20 months and I am almost 5 weeks. Its painful!! She only nurses about 3 times a day ( I am trying to decrease it to 2x/day) so its doable but that not fun. How are you making sure you get all your protein requiements? Anyone heard of the brewer diet? Its a high protein pregnancy diet. It recommends around 110 grams of protein a day I think. Being that I am nursing I bet I need even more. I doubt I will be able to stick to any kind of diet once the ms kicks in. Just curious who else is doing both.

I'm right there with you. My DD is 25 months, and nursing (a lot at night, especially).

I haven't looked into the Brewer diet yet, but I'm definitely making sure I'm eating enough protein. Heck, I had refried beans for breakfast because that was what sounded good.

I'm curious to see if anyone else in our DDC is in the same boat.

I'm nursing my 26 month old. She still nurses about 12x or more a day. That pain comes and goes though.

I'm not sure if I'm getting enough protein. I'm not a protein person but I have been craving cheese like mad so I think that's my body's natural way of getting more protein.

As we speak! My 13 month old still gets most of his nourishment from breastfeeding. Last time my milk dried up at 14 weeks. So, I've got to start pushing the solids & milk from a cup. I hope he does fine. I had a lot of guilt last time & probably will again this time. I wish I could magically keep a total supply of milk my whole pregnancy!

I follow a traditional foods diet (ala Nourishing Traditions). Plenty of organ meats, tons of eggs & good fats like coconut oil, lots of raw milks. Humanely, pasture raised from a local farm or our own chickens only. I take a zillion supplements a day too like cod liver oil, some adrenal support things, bioflavinoids and bla bla .But, still I want to research a bit & remind myself of what else I should be focusing on! I want a nice handy cheat sheet hanging in my kitchen to remind myself what food groups & nutrients I should try to take in every day...

My nipples never did hurt & I nursed through my whole last pregnancy. I hope that happens again this time! I was also ravenously hungry, day & night. :

I am nursing my 13 month old. I am really hoping my milk doesn't dry up so Owen can keep nursing as long as he wants. I will be making a bug effort to get enough protein once this stomach bug passes

Me too! I'm still nursing my 20 month old daughter. It isn't so much painful as it is somewhat annoying feeling. I love nursing her but the feeling after she has been latched on awhile or when she is twiddling starts to get to me. Sometimes it is worse than other times. My breasts have been sore off and on so I suppose my nipple soreness comes and goes and that is when it bothers me most. I'm still trucking along though!

Aubrey-I love Nourishing Traditions and Dr Westin Price's site. There is a lot of great info. How much cod liver oil are you taking? I take a 1/2 teaspoon of the Artic Blue high vitamin cod liver oil.

Glad to see that I am not the only one doing both! I have never heard of nourshing traditions... going to google it now.
I take Carlsons fish oil but its starting to gross me out so I am not sure how much longer I will be taking it.

Jamie, when was your 13 mo born? Mine's bday is 12/19/07. It's depressing but really unlikely that a woman's milk supply stays way up through a whole pregnancy. I'm sorry to hear about the dumb stomach bug! :

Firewoman, I'm just taking 3 capsules of Carlsons each day but see, that's one of the zillion things I want to research! Is that enough? Should I take more or a different kind? And I want to look up vit D & calcium & also whether I can continue the adrenal tonics during pregnancy and and and ! Info! I need info!! lol

I'm still nursing my three-year-old, but only about once a day. I hadn't thought about extra protein requirements... but with him nursing so little it's probably fine. I am following the Brewer's diet, so that should cover it.

I'm still nursing here too! My DS is 29 months old and still nursing a lot. I'm trying to cut back a little bit but we're still working on it. He mainly nurses before nap and bedtime and at least twice during the day. I'm also fighting of morning sickness and this is all new to me. My oldest wasn't nursing while I was PG with #2 so this is all a little strange.

I'm still nursing my 28 month old and I can't get enough to eat

I am still nursing my 18mo. Several times a day and several times at night. I'm just starting to be in a lot of pain. I really want to keep going though until she's at least 2yo. Although I guess there's a good chance that my milk will dry up before then. I'm not sure if I want to tandem nurse yet - I never thought it would be for me - just taking it day by day.

I've been craving protein like crazy every since I got pg.

I am still nursing my 20mo. The Brewer diet calls for 100gms of protein a day once the appetite will allow. Right now, there is no way I could be eating that much during the day...I would feel like I was going to bust. Right now, I am just eating when I am hungry. I am trying to emphasize fruits and veggies and protein. I kind of let my cravings guide me in my eating. I think this pregnancy is going to be healthier for me than my other 2. My nursling has many food allergies and I have cut all those things out of my diet. Because of that, I cannot eat any convenience junk food or any things like baked goods. The only "junky" type thing that I can eat is 85% cocoa chocolate and I really limited how much I let myself eat (1/2 serving/day) because of the caffeine. Oh, and on Friday nights I make a really low sugar chocolate pudding for myself using hemp milk.

mom to 13 mo old, still nursing

Hi everyone! Hi Zjande, I know you from the UC forum! I'm not sore yet and I haven't noticed any BIG decrease in milk supply, but I'm only 4 wks preg. Really the only preg symptoms I've had are ravenous hunger ... all last week, extra-tired, and maybe a twinge of nausea now and again. I don't usually get full-blown morning sickness until 7-8 weeks.

Jamie and Zjande .. what type of milk/formula are you planning on supplementing with? I'm kind of scared to give cow's milk, he had issues with cow's milk in the past, and is it really nutritionally complete? Is there some kind of formula recipe I could follow?

Well, since my own shorty hasn't had any troubles with milk, we're just going the whole, raw cow milk route. We're lucky to live about 40 miles from a great farm. If I couldn't get my hands on that, I'd make the liver based recipe from the recipes here: http://www.westonaprice.org/children/recipes.html (we get our pasture raised livers from the same farm as the milk). Otherwise, I'm just going to up his amounts of healthy solids- avocados, eggs, steamed veggies, organ meats, etc.

I'm a little worried about the middle of the night. He nurses several times a night. I wonder, does he need *food* then? Is he actually eating or just comfort nursing?? When my milk goes away, do we go to bed with a cup of milk on the bedside table? Would it go bad over 8 hours?? Oy, I'm so confused. Last time, my DS2 was 16.5 mos when I got pg & he did just fine when I dried up. He just comfort nursed during the night. My 13mo has never been as interested as solids as my last baby though so I don't know if he'll be the same....... :

As far as I understand, whole raw milk is nutritionally complete for babies over 12 mos. If you can only get your hands on pasteurized, I'm not sure what you could do to add back all the missing nutrition? That'd be a tough call... Oh, also, they say the main reason many folks have issues or allergies with pasteurized milks is because the pasteurization process destroys all the enzymes that make the milk digestible. Perhaps that was what happened with your DS?

Anyway, I've written a book now. My youngest are both sick today & I'm just sitting here doing the comfort nursing thing.

Still nursing my 10.5mo daughter. She's been nursing a lot more lately because she's been sick, and I've noticed an increase in supply actually. I only nursed my last dd till I was 12 weeks because she weaned on her own at 21 months, so I have no idea how this will go this time.

I am definitely still nursing my (just turned) 2 year old! She nurses still on demand, and at night a lot. I literally just found out that I am pregnant with this baby, so I haven't noticed any breast tenderness or changes in nursing.

I'll be interested to see what people start saying a little later on in this thread!

Anyway, it's good to know we are not alone...there's quite a few of us here!!

I'm nursing my 14 m.o.--he nurses several times so I'm a bit nervous. He does love food, so I guess I need to start making sure we lots of good stuff around. Would it be crazy to try pumping a little each day to save for when/if I lose my milk? Just so he could have a little from time to time? I'll also look into the homemade formulas, but may just try to integrate a lot of that stuff into foods (I'm lazy w/ bottles and all that prep).

Hoping he will nurse at least 2 years.

I'll be researching foods supplements to keep up supply, too. Please share if you have any.

Aubrey, I know you too--from the Dec07 DDC!

I am. My LO is about 16 1/2 months, and since my morning sickness kicked in, he's been nursing even more. Ug! And it's getting painful.

Last night, he was firmly latched, and dead asleep, and I had to go to the bathroom soooo bad, I finally just took it away, and split for the bathroom. Poor DH had to leave his office and comfort DS until I was done... I felt terrible after, but he's a big boy, he'll handle it.

Gotta say, though, just from pain alone, I'm reeeeeeally tempted to wean.
