They are a part of Melaluca. I'm not, but it's been discussed here before. Here are some links for you! =)

Multi-level-marketing. In other words, you probably won't make any money.

I did Melaleuca before. Very difficult and not done easily from home with children. If you do it from home you have to buy lots of phone leads which cost money...for about every $100 you get one signed up and most of them never become business builders so it makes it very difficult for you to move up in commission.

If my friend asked me if they should do it I would tell them definitely not to.

Not entirely fair or true. Melaleuca is not MLM and lots of folks make money. It does take a lot of work...many hours and it is sales despite what The Mom Team says. Honestly, no matter what type of business you have, you have to learn sales.
I have been a Melaleuca customer for years and am very happy. I don't really do the business because I just don't have the time. It takes a lot of time to build any business and Melaleuca's no different.

This depends on who you ask...

The Federal Trade Commission considers them to be MLM: ".... negative experiences with various MLMs, inlcuding Quixtar, 4Life.... Melaleuca...." They also claim that Melaleuca opposes a federally mandated disclosure in regards to income statistics.

And THIS article by Laura Onstot of "Seattle Weekly", among many other claims, states: "The average annual income for most marketing executives, according to a report issued by Melaleuca for 2006, is $90. About 72 percent of the executives are at this level."

Melaleuca is really tough to sale. They have a lot of rules on advertising (cant say the name or the product names). So, people are skeptical. Plus, you have to buy monthly and customers have to buy monthly, even if you don't need that much (like my family). I really tried to make it work, but it didn't. I worked my butt off, but it wouldn't succeed. It is just a tough one.

I have done several MLM's and most of them work. I made good money with Avon and good money with discovery toys. I recently started with Barefoot Books and I like that a lot (but I am passionate about the products so it is easy for me to sell). No matter what, sales is important with all those businesses. Trial and error, hard work, good at sales, and a positive attitude will help you succeed.

PS - I do consider Melaleuca an MLM (so is the business I do). HOWEVER, I do not consider MLM's as a bad thing. They do work (just find a good commission plan) and you can succeed. Just do homework on the business beforehand and find one that has good ethics.

Good Luck!
