I've made a beautiful sweater. I used the mattress stitch to seam up the shoulders and the sides of the sleeves. That looks great. The problem I'm having is that I can't figure out how to seam the sleeves to the body, since the sleeve stitches are then sideways, does that make sense? When I tried to do it, it looked like Frankenstein!!! I spent too much time and money to have such awful seams.

http://knitty.com/ISSUEspring06/FEATspr06TT.html You want the invisible weave method.
What I'd add to that, though, is that if you're weaving, don't assume that a single length of yarn to stitch with is better. I normally use two, maybe three, to help me ease the sleeves into place. I also find it's easier to attach the sleeves first and then sew them up, but YMMV.
