I was about to order some of the Spry Xylitol gum, when I read the ingredient list, and there was glycerin in it. Would this coat the teeth in the same way that glycerin in toothpaste does, preventing the teeth from absorbing minerals? Why do they put glycerin in their gum???

gums.
We also use Tom's of Maine Silly Strawberry toothpaste fluoride-free plus added Xylitol to it. It has vegetable glycerin in it.
All of my son's little cavities have remineralized, and the one big one he had has been arrested or halted. So anyone who would try to tell me that glycerin prevents teeth from absorbing minerals, I'd tell them "They don't know what they're talking about...unless it's animal glycerin!"
From what I understand, animal glycerin is thick and oily, whereas the plant-source glycerin is water soluble.
Glycerin is added to products such as toothpaste, gum, and skin products, etc. to make them smooth. In toothpaste it is an added sweetener, plus it foams.

From what I've read, if a product just says 'glycerin' on it but doesn't explain anything else, it's of animal origin; otherwise it will say 'plant/or vegetable' glycerin.

So where did the whole glycerine is bad idea come from?
(I was skeptical about it because I know people who use regular toothpastes and don't get cavities...) Jen |
The vegetable glycerin is water soluble as well as hypoallergenic.
But the most important part for me to know is: if using Xylitol in the toothpaste with vegetable glycerin it does remineralize the teeth and halt cavities. My son is proof of this!

Like I said previously animal glycerin use to be used and it is thick and nasty, [the research my mom did on glycerin, it said that the animal product was thick like petroleum jelly and that is icky, to say the least] then when folks started getting health conscious, alternatives were looked for. That's when researchers discovered that vegetable glycerin worked just as well.
