Moms who live in hot and humid climates...

what is your favorite wrap?

We live in Costa Rica. I want to get a wrap for my next baby, but so many of them look so hot.

What do you suggest?

Hola! I'm grew up in the Dominican Republic, so know what type of weather you are talking about.

I would go with something very light and I'd skip a stretchy wrap in this case and go for a woven wrap. Some options are Ellaroo, Didymos - (the ones that are "jacquard" weave though, not the others), Hoppediz "Light One", Ellevill...and I'm thinking there must be others. I will post again if I remember. But, something light is what you are looking for. Also, you may want to consider a short wrap. You won't be able to do as many carries as a long wrap, but you'd have less fabric around you. With a short wrap you can still do a back carry, hip carry, rebozo carry and front carry.

i'm sure you're probably more used to the weather so it doesn't affect you as much, but i can't even imagine wearing a wrap in that kind of climate i'm sweating at just the thought!

it's not great for super heavy toddlers or anything, but the Bali Breeze wraps from Wrapsody (formerly gypsy mama) are very light and airy, made from a cotton gauze. Calin Bleu also makes a gauze wrap. i have a short-ish one that i will sometimes use for a rucksack carry in the summer, or take on vacation to the beach and such. it woud be great a baby though. and once you hit toddlerhood you might want something different anyway, like a mei tai or SSC.

I'm in CR too! I've been using a ring sling I made myself - has worked really well. Now that he's getting heavier we just switched to a wrap.

I would look for something made with Solarveil fabric. I bought a couple yards and made myself a pouch a few years back. they dry very quickly so are great for use in pools etc, and are very light, the breeze gets through pretty nicely.

I picked up a TaylorMade Organic Cotton Mesh ring sling, hoping it will be ideal for GA's peak heat/humidity.. when baby will be arriving.

It has less coverage than a wrap which seems like a good thing for comfortability, but the material is really the only reason I decided to go with that style as I have no actual experience with a RS.

I found mine for $45 here.

**Totally realize you were looking for wrap suggestions.. not ring slings, but wanted to post anyway.

nak. i live in SC and have found the Bali Breeze to be a good wrap (but you need to watch pressure points). i also love my mei tai. i have a kozy and i think it will be ok here in summer but i wonder if you could find one with breezier fabric... they just seem to cover you less than a wrap does, kwim?

Thank you all for the suggestions!

I started looking at the solarveil stuff...didn't know that it was discontinued...so sad. The only solarveil wrap I found was $95 (ugg).

I snatched up a solarveil hotsling for <$11 on ebay...so I will add that to my other hotsling, my homemade ring sling, and my Ergo.

I'm still thinking that I would like a wrap, especially to wear around the house while I'm doing stuff with my older ones. So I will definitely keep checking out some of your suggestions ....now I just need someone to fund one

Hola! I also live in Costa Rica (in San Juan de Santa Barbara in Heredia - I'd love to meet up sometime!) and although I don't use a wrap, I can share with you what I'm using as baby carriers for my 2 month old.

I have the Ergo with the infant insert and a Hotsling. I like both because I can be hands free, but am not entirely comfortable using either (my back hurts!) I think that that only proves that I am still getting used to the adjustments on them - so I've been watching the "how to" videos over again this week.

The Hotsling has become my preferred baby carrier since it's faster to just grab and put my LO into if he's fussing. It's also lighter weight (for these sweltering days!) and therefore makes me and baby sweat less. As I see it, the infant insert on the Ergo would be great for the middle of a temperate climate winter, but is just a bit much for the tropics! It was great for a day trip to the Irazu volcano, though! ;-) I'm sure I'll be using the Ergo more as my LO gets bigger and doesn't need the infant insert.

I bought these two baby carriers with more of an eye towards the reviews they had gotten for ergonomics rather than for use in a tropical climate. I'm all ears for another option, though! Please let me know if you come up with something that works wonderfully for you.

P.S. Gabriel gets a ton of attention when he's in the sling - seems like strollers or in arms are the only "normal" ways for babies to be carried in Costa Rica (though I've seen the odd BabyBjorn style baby pack)... so whatever sling or wrap you choose, get ready for some extra attention when you are out and about!

solarveil is discontinued but solarweave is not. try looking for that maybe?

nak.

you said you made homemade slings.
perhaps you can purchase some solarweave fabric or linen and make a wrap for yourself?
linen can be very supportive yet breathable.
if you have access to comparing bamboo materials, that can be nice too.
