Please help with supplements - allergies, etc.

cross-posted in Health & Healing.....

Hello, not sure if this is the right forum, so please let me know...

I'm hoping someone can help me figure out what type of vitamins/supplements/enzymes my 2 kiddos should be receiving - I've been reading for days and seem to be getting more confused...

Both kids are relatively healthy and happy, and eat a balanced diet. DS drinks rice milk, so I am concerned with his calcium/protein every day. They each take a daily multivitamin (Lil Critters gummies). DH and I have no allergies or health issues. DD obviously has an overactive immune system, can anything be done about that through supplements? DS has numerous issues as well...I just feel that more can be done for them but I am overwhelmed at the info out there. Thank you for any advice!

Here is a brief history:

DD, 6yrs
Known Allergies: peanut (ana), tree nut, cantaloupe, plums, sunflower seeds, grasses, ragweed, dust mites, trees, dog dander, maybe garlic. Oral Allergy Syndrome. Allergic type reactions to mosquitos. Dark circles under her eyes, can be emotional/hyperactive...brilliant, beautiful, kind, generous, athletic...

DS, 3 yrs
Tested + to dairy/soy at 18mos, avoided since then but recently can tolerate a little. Mostly GI/behavioral issues. Intolerant to food dye, this also seems to be diminishing (can have a pack of Smarties candies w/out totally losing it). SID, verbal apraxia, he is in OT/PT/ST, early education...a natural comedian, caring, thoughtful, very loving...

I don't know if I have great answers for you but one thing that jumps out at me - the Lil'Critters gummies IIRC doesn't have much in the way of fat soluble vitamins and has no real minerals. Could you do bone broth for your kids? I'm finding minerals and really healthy, organic saturated fats to be critical.

It's a hot topic, but calcium is soo overrated. Does your son eat any fish/meat/chicken? He's probably getting plenty of protein if he does, even in child sized portions. You really don't need that much. Some people's bodies function better with more, but I wouldn't assume there is a problem.

There is so much information floating around this forum I'm really way behind myself, but you can start with some of the gut healing procedures for both your children (and yourself).

If you do decide to go with enzymes, which I'm not sure is the first place to start, but if you do, I'm have a lot of success with Houston's. I'm taking ZymePrime, AFP-Peptizyde, and No-Fenol. (The same ones that are in TriEnza but I can fiddle with the ratios)

Maybe that's a start? Are you looking for help on any symptom in particular or truly heal the whole?

Thank you for the reply. I guess my problem is a total lack of knowledge - I mean with the Lil Critters vitamins, how did you know about the lack of fat soluable vitamins and minerals? I will definitely make bone broth - I've never heard of that (I'm not a cook by any means) though a quick online search brought back lots of good info. Thank you!

DS has been to ped GI for chronic loose stools - no advice or help there. He used to drink approx. 24 oz of rice milk/day, but has cut back to 10-12oz and his stool has firmed up considerably. Some foods go straight through - mandarin oranges, for example - if he eats a small bowl they will come out completely whole. Not sure what kind of problem that is...

I'm going to scour this forum for the next few weeks and try to learn as much as I can. There is so much great information here - thank you everyone. I really think we need to alter our diet as I feel that I am in a stupor or fog have the time - like I can't even think...I was joking to my DH that I am literally losing my mind. Maybe it's our diet?

Or maybe I need more sleep - good night all, and thanks again.

Heh, I know because DH won't take real vitamins so we buy him lil'critters half as a joke. I remember reading the label and noticing they didn't have much of anything that would be a problem for an overdose, which is good but also means there are some critical nutrients low or missing.

Luckily, bone broth doesn't require much in the way of cooking skills. The crock pot is a really good way to do it. If you can get 1c./day into everyone you'll be doing a really good thing. You can also add probiotics either to warm broth (not hot) or taken separately that is generally a good thing to do as well. There are pills available, but lacto-fermented veggies are a great source. I know it's more cooking but it is actually easy once you get the hang of it. Take a look around the TF forum for tips and ideas.

I would stop any food that your son doesn't digest, at least until you figure out any more. Some foods are indigestible to most people, but something is definitely going on if he's not digesting a soft food like oranges.

If you feel in a fog - that is a symptom of toxins in some form. It can be dairy, cleaning products, plastics or other materials off-gassing in your home so I would take that pretty seriously. Lots and lots of organic fats, epsom salt baths. Vitamin C, Vitamins A & D If you eat dairy/gluten yourself you might want to give them up for a few weeks to see if it makes an improvement.

I'm totally rambling (sleep deprivation!), but a common way to start would be
1c. bone broth/day
probiotics,
Cod Liver Oil
Then start changing your foods to TF, lacto-fermented veggies

There is more to say about your DS's gut health - feel free to ask more questions or even PM me. I'd be very happy to break down the healing the gut stuff for you some time when I've had a little more rest
