Shampoo bar recipes?

I want to start making our own body care products- purely for our family to use and not to sell. I found a great soap bar recipe but can't seem to find too many shampoo bars. I've looked at a lot of websites and most of what I'm finding are recipes for soap, but not specifically shampoo. Does anyone have a really basic shampoo bar good for all hair types? I don't need anything fancy, just something to get me started. I do have a bunch of books that I should be getting from the library in the next few weeks, although the one I want really bad (The Soapmaker's Companion) has 3 people waiting ahead of me so it will be almost 2 months before I get it.

Anyway, if anyone has one or two basic recipes they would be willing to share I'd appreciate it!

Anyone? Or is there another forum I should be in? I seriously am not going to be selling these...I have no interest in that. I just want to make our own stuff for purity and because it's cheaper...

Hi Fellow Soapin' Mama~
I have the Soapmakers Companion and I don't see a shampoo bar. I did look through my notebook that I keep recipes and I did find the following for making shampoo. I forget which book I originally found these in, but it was some type of "make your own beauty products" from the library.

Bouncing Bet Shampoo
1/4 c. crushed soapwort root and leaves
4 c. distilled water

Place soapwort in saucepan, pour water over and heat over medium for 15 min. Strain out solids and save liquid. Pour 1/2 c. over wet hair and massage. Soapwort can easily be grown from seeds. Cut them back after flowers have faded. Makes 32 oz.

Alligator Pear Shampoo
1/2 avocado, mashed
1/2 c. water
1/2 t. fresh lemon juice
2 t. avocado oil
1/2 c. liquid castile soap

Blend together. Use small amount to shampoo, rinse. Store shampoo in fridge and discard after a few weeks. Makes 8 oz.

Diluted apple cider vinegar works great for a conditioner. A few teaspoons to a pitcher of water. Pour on, work through, rinse. You can even add some essential oils to the water for a yummy smell. I like adding Sweet Orange oil as it smells great and is fairly inexpensive compared to other essential oils.

Hope these help!

Hello again!

Looking further through my notebook I did find a shampoo bar...YAY! Here it is...

Castile Soap & Shampoo bar

14 oz. olive oil
2 oz. cocoa butter
1/2 oz. beeswax
2.2 oz. lye
8 oz. water

Options: 1 T. henna, 2 t. neroli oil, 1 t. sandalwood, 1/8 t. clove oil

Fats: 140 degrees
Lye: 150 degrees

Trace for 30 minutes
Mold for 2 days
Put in freezer overnight
Cure for 4 weeks

I couldn't tell from your email whether or not you've made soap before. If so, the info about temperature, tracing, etc. will probably make sense. If you haven't then those directions may seem a little sparse. I've been making soap for a few years now and would be happy to answer questions either on this thread or you can pm me.

you can formulate your own by using oils beneficial to hair. avocado, jojoba, olive, ect...high-ish amount (10-15%) of castor is good for hair, coconut for nice lather...be sure to use a lower superfat to reduce the amount of oils left on your hair. unless you have really dry hair, i'd keep your superfat at 2-4%.

just a reminder that you should always run a recipe thru a lye calculator to double check lye and water amounts. there can be mistakes in rewriting recipes and you don't want to ruin a bunch of oils b/c you took the recipe at face value with how much lye to use.

a good calc is www.soapcalc.com

www.millersoap.com a FABLOUS beginner soap site for learning the basics of soapmaking. as for how to build a soap recipe... take a look at www.soapcalc.com a great soap calculator that has all the properties of each oil and on one of the pages it describes what each property means and also gives guideines on building a soap recipe. i use the "soapcalc9" it basically is the same except it only spaces for 9 oils.

a good sub for palm is lard...it makes a great bar of soap...hard and very mild. not to mention cost effective.

i wanted to add...with soapcalc, you can tweak your recipe till you get the outcome you want....if you want a more conditioning bar, just play with the numbers till the conditioning number gets to where you want it, if you want a more cleansing bar, adjust your cleansing oils, ect...it's quite addicting. but remember the ultimate test is to try a bar on your skin...sometimes the number in the calc don't *always* tell the true story, but it's a good guide.
