Safe and affordable play food?

Can anyone recommend some safe play food and accessories for our kitchen? My kids keep putting the gross plastic MIC stuff we have in their mouths.... I need to replace it with something better!

Thanks!

Willow tree toys, has some MIC stuff, but they test everything themselves. You might look at their website: http://www.willowtreetoys.com/category/3d/

If you are the slightest bit crafty it is REALLY easy to make your own needle felted food. An apple would take 1/2 hour max. It's cheap too. A felting needle and foam block would set you back a few dollars and the coloured roving would be about $10 for a small mixed bag. There are tutorials on youtube. I highly recommend giving is a try!

I also make felt food. It takes me about 2-3 hours to make a piece or set of pieces (aka a pizza) by hand. It is easy and fun. Check out etsy for ideas.

If you're not crafy, we have the Plan Toys veggies, and they've stood up for 2+ years now, and a set of cookware from Ikea has also stood up well.

Almost all of our play food is Haba. We tend to buy from oompa.com.

I love Haba food, but a lot of it is teeny tiny, so if your kids are still at a mouthing age that might not be the best solution.

You can find lots of neat, handmade felt food at etsy.

DD really enjoys her M & D Food Groups set...

And her pots and pans from Alex Toys...

Both sets are made by reasonably responsible toy manufacturers and priced really well. Plus, they are super cute!

We bought a bunch of turned wood shapes from a woodcrafter and I spent an evening painting fruit with non-toxic paints and sealant. She just loves it.

I think for the non-fruit items I'm going to go with wool felt. It's easy to work with.
