How do you air your LO out?

We are having a rash issue - splotchy slightly raised stripes on LO's upper thighs and some redness on her labia. It is not terrible (i.e., no broken skin, & the redness is not extremely bright) but it is the worst WE have seen. We use prefolds only, with cotton/PUL (imse vimse) covers and wool covers (aristocrat). I wash in 1 cold cycle, 1 hot cycle, + 1 warm rinse & have always used biokleen powder & nothing else added in.

I'd like to air her out (I am a SAHM with no other kids so I can totally focus on her) but have some issues. Ideally, I'd love to just lay her on some prefolds and let her hang out totally naked from the waist down all day (she's only 2 mo, so she doesn't move around yet). However, it is winter and her little legs get cold to the touch when I lay her down on some prefolds with just a long-sleeve shirt on.

I'm curious: how do you all air your babies out in the winter? If you go coverless, do you also put clothes (pants) on? If you use wool covers, does it seem to let enough air in?

I use babylegs if I'm afraid DD's legs will get too cold.

Babylegs. Or right before bathtime I blast the heat for 20 minutes so the house gets really toasty (turning it right back down afterwards) and the kids seem to like that.

I third the baby legs. DD's gramma made her tow pairs and she loves them . If you don't have any, just stick a pair of her socks on her and on top of that put a pair of your socks (or whatever fits) that you've cut the feet off of. Voila! Instant babylegs.

When ds was little, I would give him tummy time at the same time, and just laid a crocheted blanket on top - when he wasn't moving much and it would stay there.

I like longies in the winter. The wool does seem to breathe well.

Babylegs are a great idea - I don't have any! Maybe with this new one...(due Aug).

I put DD in leg warmers and a long-sleeved shirt or onsie and leave it open. Then I lay her on prefolds and/or towels.

Rather than one long air-out, I do a short one with each change, so it's not long enough for him to get cold. If I want to do a long one I turn the space heater up in my room and lay him near it, so he has a warm breeze.

I've been just wrapping ds loosely in a bath towel, on top of a waterproof pad. He's only 3 weeks so not moving and that helped him to air out but without being too cold. Also, my mom suggested when he had a rash that I wash his heiny in warm water in the sink when he pooped, instead od using wipes or a washcloth so as not to irritate his butt more. Seemed to help, the combo.

Babylegs and socks, none of those snap-crotch shirts we got dozens of.

Also you can use the prefold with just a diaper belt (like a scrunchie around the waist) holding it on and no cover, or just snappied (if you like snappis) for part of the day, at home or any time when a small leak would be no big deal.

I second the baylegs. What I also do is to put some baking soda in with the water when I bathe my son, this works great for diaper rash (not my idea, Dr Sears recommends this!). You could give that a try?

my dd had a terrible rash when she was a nb. We aired her out, but it was summer, so it was not cold. Anyways, my mom recommended using a blow dryer with a cool setting to make sure all of the moisture was off her bottom before we put the diaper back on. It worked like a charm. With girls you just have to remember to cover the vagina and urethra opening while you do it.

I use wool and fleece. But frequently when I change his diaper & take him to the potty (we EC) I'll give him a half hour or so of nakey butt time, with just a flannel receiving blanket covering his lower half, and hang out with him singing and playing games. Since he has the blanket I don't worry too much, but he's older than your LO. I suggest if you want to keep her toasty warm, get some baby legs and nice warm socks for your nakey butt time.
