Second Blood Test...Why??

So I just got a blood test confirming that I am pregnant! YAY! The only reason I got the blood test done in the first place is because the at-home pee test came back very faint (because it's still very early), and instead of buying another and waiting...I decided to just go get a quick reassurance.

Anyway, a very nice nurse delivered the great news today, but she also said that because I am so newly pregnant (around 3 weeks) they want me to come back in a few days to get a second blood test. Something about making sure the levels keep rising. I don't know...I honestly don't understand it. Pregnant is pregnant right? Why do I have to get another blood test done? Anyone have experience with this?

First Congrats!

It is pretty common practice to get a second blood draw.. Your HCG level should double every 2 days. Any number above 5 is considered to be pregnant, when I first when in this time my level was 14 which is pregnant but really low indicating a very early pregnancy, by the second blood draw it was in the 130's so I knew it had for sure doubled. Did they tell you what your number was?

Good luck and congrats! :

Okay....I guess I just never ran into this with my first pregnancy. It makes me a little nervous. So, they're just making sure my number doubles itself and that everything is going well?

She didn't tell me what my level was at today. I guess I was so happy and dazed by the news that I forgot to ask what the second test was all about. I will ask what both numbers are next time.

Thanks for answering my first of many annoying questions!

Both Treehugginmama and lil_stinkyfeet are correct. They like to make sure the HCG is doubling properly. You can compare your test result to other woman the same DPO that you are here: http://betabase.info/. Congratualtions!:::
