I'm So Bummed! (and Suggestions, Maybe?)

I got some pocket diapers for Christmas, and today (since we've been packing/moving since Christmas) I put one on DS. After a few hours, I noticed he was getting a rash. Took the dipe off, and just about instantly, the spots started going away. So DS is sensitive/allergic to wool. I don't know what to do. I/we want to cloth diaper, but now I don't know what to do. Do they make AIO/pocket dipes that aren't wool? I have some prefolds but no covers, so I'm not comfortable going out with him.

Do they make pocket or AIO dipes that aren't wool? If so, is there anywhere I can trade/sell the ones I have for some that aren't wool? I'd prefer trade, but sell would be alright too. I'm so bummed out.

I'm confused - most AIO and pockets aren't wool - in fact I don't know of any that are wool - I've seen snap in diapers (Lovey bums and Sugar Peas) and the lovely yet expensive fuzbomb - but are you sure they are wool? I'm guessing the allergy is to the polyester micro fleece or detergent. If they are actually wool - would you mind sharing the brand? Thanks!

Pockets are usually micro fleece (polyester)or cotton or hemp with a PUL outer. AIOS are too.

For great non wool AIOS made in the USA - go to http://www.bluepenguin.biz/aio.html and check out the sposoeasy - cotton or you can get cotton/hemp.

dreamez (mtdiaperstore.com) has great non wool aios made in China. http://www.mtdiaperstore.com/product...roducts_id=558

I liked Swaddlebees pockets (get the new ones - cotton next to skin not polyester) - but I prefer flats/prefolds in cover or Crickett's fitted from Crickettsdiapers.com under wool covers.

What detergent did you use?
Did you wash after storing/before using?

sorry!

are you sure they aren't just pressure marks? We have pocket dipes and because the fleece is textured it leaves 'marks' on the baby.

The tag says Nikky, they are made in japan, it says "100% wool".

They aren't pressure marks, because it was all over his body. It was worst where the diaper had been, but it was everywhere on him.

Nickky makes a wool diaper cover - not an aio or pocket - unless it was purchased in another country - but not available here as far as I know. There is a "pocket" of sorts where the cover goes to 2 layer - in the wet zone - but it still requires a diaper inside it.....such as a prefold, flat or fitted........

Wool covers need to be washed with a wool wash such as Eucalan or Kookaburra wool wash or Sudz n Dudz.....and lanolized periodically - the Nickky packaging isn't too clear on that (I have 2 newborn and 2 small ones waiting for the baby to come in June!)

I'm assuming that the covers are natural wool colored with velcro closures, gussets, a "pocket" where there are 2 layers - which is deceiving because a prefold, fitted, or flat need to go on top of that - touching the skin......

so it's not a diaper by itself? I'm so confused now. Where can I get the wash/lanolin for them? Would the wool still be in contact with his skin with a diaper underneath? or would the wash stuff keep him from being irritated by the wool? are the two layers just to add to leakproof-ness? I'm so new to this, sorry.

That's ok! First of all you will need to buy some prefolds or fitteds (prefolds are cheaper, dry faster and are easier to clean while fitteds cost more but you can snap or velcro them on....with the wrap style cover you have - I'd get a prefold).

buy the infant size for 8-15 pounds and the premium size for 15-30 pounds - get them online and find free shipping - if you get unbleached - wash and dry on hot 6 times before using - if you get white ones - just once will do
http://www.abbyslane.com/catalog.php?category=17 - free shipping
http://nickisdiapers.com/catalog.php?category=214 free ship over $75

Wool wash: http://www.abbyslane.com/catalog.php?category=230
or diaperware.com sells kookaburra

Go here: http://diaperpin.com/howto.asp
for info on how to use cloth diapers - towards the bottom it talks about wool care

The wool wouldn't touch necessarily - except around the edges
The double layers are to increase absorbency- although I put a double in between for nights.....and used a prefold as a diaper.
The Nickky wool wrap you have is a diaper cover - for other covers that aren't wool people love Thirsties, Imse Vimse, Bummis (all available at the websites I mentioned above)
Wool is great because it's all natural - is virtually leakproof if properly lanolized/washed and breathes. But most people use PUL covers (Thirsties, Bummis)......

It's a lot - if you get overwhelmed - just buy the Bummis kit
http://nickisdiapers.com/catalog.php?category=511
- from either store I mentioned or amazon.com or ...well a million places
Good luck

PS my son is extremely sensitive and used wool covers - maybe yours would not react if the wool was properly washed - you can use a mild baby shampoo to wash them (wool is hair) and melt some Lasinoh lanolin (for your nipples - most stores including grocery carry it) in bowl of warm water and then soak the covers for 20 min or so then roll up in a towel to get out the water and hang dry.....

Use LUKE WARM WATER TO WASH/RINSE!!!

I think he might be allergic to the wool. Washing in a wool wash might make a difference though. But if I were you I would get different covers.

Looks like Mommashark gave you some great info! I think you'll be a happy camper once you get your prefolds or fitteds to go inside the cover! Good luck!

You migth not be able to use wool at all, sorry. We are a wool-allergic family here...what you might need to do is choose a different waterporrof layer..the options are wool, PUL and fleece. You can get some nice cheap PUL covers, I like thirsties personally, and you put something absorbant, generally called the "diaper", which can be a prefold or a fitted diaper, and then you put the cover over it.

Sharkmama gave you some good ideas, but i just wanted to point pout, using wool might not be an option at all..you might have to choose a different system altogether.
