good diapering system for infrequent blowout pooper?

My daughter is just over 7 weeks old and has been in disposables from the start. For at least the last four weeks she only poops about once every three days, but every poop is a huge blowout.

We're now getting ready to transition over to cloth diapers, but haven't decided which type yet. I definitely want something that can handle her enormous but infrequent poops. Any recommendations?

We're inclined towards prefolds and covers (probably Thirsties, because of the leg gussets) since that's the cheapest system, but if you think something else would work better for our DD, please suggest away!

Lots of people use pf's without trouble with blowouts - as long as your cover fits well, you should be ok. I like fitteds and covers, cuz then you have an extra elastic barrier. I'll be using a combo with my nb - coming Aug! I'll be using Thirsties covers, too.

I agree with pp. As long as the PF is snug you should be good. Thirsties are great covers. I plan to use TFF with Thirsties covers for the next one!

I have a skinny-leg baby with every-other-day poops that blowout every time. Up until last week, a cover couldn't hold them. I learned a trick though, and now we have moderate success. First of all, I need big leg gussets, and the cover will get poopy every time, so a cover lasts until a poop.
The big breakthrough was that I need to put the pf on loose. It muse be tight around the waist, tight around the legs, and pouchy in the butt. Days that I expect poop I use pins instead of a snappi, no doubler (I have a big pee-er, so we usually use a doubler), and put pants over the cover just in case. Luckily he gives poop signs 1-3 hours before pooping, and has a pretty good schedule of when, as well.
By moderate success, I mean that we have success unless he pees right after a poop, then everything is yellow because the poop makes the diaper not absorb, so the pee comes out the legs carrying poop.

It's an adventure!

He's 2 months, by the way, so similar age to yours, and I'm in the process of getting fitteds to try, though I don't forsee success with poops.

We do all right with prefolds and a cover that fits right. I like Imse Vimse covers, they catch what the diaper doesn't. Would much rather wash a cover than a whole outfit--some of the sposie blowouts we've had have been epic.

Motherease Sandies REALLY hold it in though. You could get a few Sandies (they work best with the ME covers) for poop days. The smalls fit for a long time so you do get your money's worth.

I would get the prefolds and covers and see what happens, you'll be surprised how much more they hold than disposables.

I started my dd on cloth at 3 months, but before that every disposable poop was a blow out (up to the shoulders... yikes). Anyways, I have not had a blow out while using Happy Heiney diapers. I absolutely love them. However, I have had a problem with leakage (urine) overnight as we are no longer changing her in the middle of the night. Even despite that drawback, I can not say enough good things about HH.

We had major poo and pee splosions with sposies - that's what convinced me to switch to cloth. We used Motherease (sandies and one size) with their airflow covers (with snaps). We never had an explosion once we switched. Seriously. That's what made me a cloth diaper believer!

i love rumparooz! They're one size pockets. They have inner gussets so there's two barriers preventing poo from escaping. I haven't tried them with a little baby yet, only discovered them recently. Can't wait to try them out with this next one! With other gusseted dipes, like thirsties and proraps, only one set of elastic makes contact with baby, so there's only one line of defense against blowouts. But the RaRz, both sets of elastic are functional.

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by how well any cloth diapering system works compared to disposables-- I know I was!

I think prefolds and Thirsties will work great for you. I also recommend getting a couple good pockets (I LOVE fuzzi bunz-- would love to try Blueberries, but haven't been able to justify the $$ yet since I already have lots of pockets!) for when you're out and about. They are SO EASY to change and use. And I've never *knock on wood* had a blow-out with fuzzi bunz.

My older daughter only pooped every 10-13 days. You can imagine the size of that. Anyway, we used prefolds and covers and while we did have some leakage due to the size of the poop, the prefolds held the most poop. My 3 month old poops every 2-3 days and never leaks from a prefold or fitted, but pockets and AIOs do not hold it in very well.

Thanks for the advice everyone! I feel much better now. I think we'll stick with the prefolds and covers plan, plus get a few fitted or pocket diapers to try on poop days or when we're out. Still feeling a little overwhelmed at learning all the fastening methods and folds and washing methods and lions and tigers and bears oh my! ... but not as overwhelmed as before. :-)
