Non vaxed child exposed to shingles

My 3.5 year old DS has had no vaccines. Since Friday night I have had a painful rash and finally today it was so bad that I went to the doctors. Thank goodness I did because she said it is shingles. The doctor said it was unlikely DS would get chickenpox but several friends have told me otherwise.

Does anyone know how likely it is that he will catch chickenpox. We cosleep and are extremely cuddly and often eat off of the same fork so he's definitely been exposed to my germs.

I know chickenpox has about a 14 day incubation period...would that start from the time I noticed my rash?

It's very difficult to catch CP from shingles- he would need contact with the blisters and their fluid.

If they cosleep and cuddle wouldn't he have access to the blisters and fluid?

If you don't cover the rash and your child gets the fluid on him he may get cp.

For your shingles, put apple cider vinegar on it often.

my mom tells me that I got CP from my grandmothers shingles.

PPs are correct that you have to have contact with fluid from the sores, but as we all know, families share everything including fluids

are you worried about CP? It would suck if you were still sick while your LO is sick.

Thanks to the pp who suggested the ACV. I had seen that on a few other threads and have applied it several times and it is really helping to ease the pain...I still can't sleep though...but the only ACV i have here is my no-poo hair rinse and it is pretty diluted...i will have to get a new bottle tomorrow so i can do it full strength.

The rash hasn't gotten to the blistery phase yet but when it does I think I may expose DS to it on purpose. I have no plans on vaccinating him for anything, least of all chickenpox, and I think it would be cool if he could get it at 3 and then just be done with it. I guess it would suck if he had it and I still felt totally sick but my mom would help me care for him and his father is usually pretty helpful when I ask him to care for DS if I am sick.

If he does get it I guess I may be posting on my local board for the ever so important pox playdates!!

No, you can't "catch" shingles. And you can only get it if you have already had cp (or cp vax).

Hrm.....

Could my daughter have gotten cold sore from the CP vax then?

Yes I get cold sores, but I am VERY careful. I don't kiss the kids when I have one. I don't let them touch my face. I wash their hands if they accidentally do touch my face. I don't let them drink after me. Yet somehow DD ended up with some bumps in her mouth shortly after one. I took her in and they said it was herpes. I told them I was very careful and my older daughter never got them from me and they said, "it doens't matter she got them from you." She got those spots in her mouth a few times.. and started getting cold sores around 7 or 8. NOT ONE of my other four kids get them. Oldest DD got the CP shot at 7. Youngest two are completely vax free. Now I really wanna know what the possibility is that she got it from the vax. DH always blames me for giving them to her. Off to check.

Kitty I hope you feel better soon. My dc got cp last year ages 10,12 and 15. I was ever so glad they'd got it eventually. Ds,the youngest hardly was affected, very few spots but both dd's, oh dear, they had a rough time and were covered in the blisters. I used colloidal silver in spray form from health shop, expensive but very good stuff, maybe you could try some.

No. Same virus (herpes zoster) but cp, natural or vax, can't cause cold sores.
