what do you keep dirty diapers in?

We EC so I've never worried too much about dirty diapers as they're pretty much all pee, and DD is only a year old and has been pretty much exclusively breastfed till relatively recently. However, in the past month she's started to eat a lot more solids, and I've started to notice a pee smell from her diapers. I've always just kept them in a regular laundry basket, completely open, and washed them every couple of days. Now that we have a bigger washer and are getting better at EC, I'd switched to every four or five days. However, I think I might want to keep the pee diapers in a more closed container to stop the smell. So I'm wondering what you other CD'ing mamas use. I don't particularly want to get a diaper champ or any of those fancy things--seems too complicated for me--but I'm open to it. Does anybody just use a pail with a lid on it or something like that?

We just use a trash can with a tight fitting lid. It has a vent in the back.

Just use a trash can with a tight lid. At day care I give them a step open trash can with a pail liner and it works great!

I use a large PUL wet bag from GMD, inside a step-top trash can from Wal-Mart or Fred Meyer's (IL's bought it, so I'm not sure). The top is tight, opens easily, and is the perfect size for the bag. On laundry day I take the whole thing, dump it into the washer, and toss in the bag.

Yup - we just got a cheapo trash can with a flip top lid. I don't even use a regular waterproof liner - just a cotton one I sewed up quick with some leftover quilt fabric... I actually got a second one to put in the bathroom for poopy diapers (pee diapers go in a pail in ds's room next to the changing table). Then I just toss liner and all into the washer.

Pee smell might also mean you need to strip your diapers... But it could just be that she has more "big girl" pee.

Yes, I've been meaning to strip my diapers. They're mostly prefolds, though, so just cotton, and I wash in Allen's Naturally. And I'm pretty sure it's just "big girl" pee because I've also noticed that the sheets smell more when she leaks at night... :

Thanks for the advice! I meant to get a step trash can when she was born but never got around to it, and then I discovered that her breastfed diapers really didn't smell. I need to get one anyway for the kitchen so maybe I'll just get two.

I use a pail liner. I just toss it into the machine each time I wash the diapers.

this is pretty much what I do. I have an old hand me down pail from a friend, nothing fancy, with a tight lid. Works great~ its easy to wash out every now and then too.

Just ordered a set of wetbags from a mama on DS. I got a large one for hom, medium one for the diaper bag and a mini one for wipes for the diaper bag.

oh yeah...actually, I also have a GoodMama, size L hanging diaper bag in the downstairs bathroom. Its great, very pretty, washes easy~ I hang it to dry and have the perfect strong hook in the bathroom, behind the door, to hang it on.

~ just another thought if you wanna bypass the pail alltogether~ lots of people just go for a hanging wetbag.

I had two diaper pails and used wet bags too.

Now the diaper pail is still in the laundry room and is used for household cloth (we are a paperfree home).
