Only Stinky At Night?

Why do my diapers only smell when my LO wakes up in the morning? They have no smell at all during the day but his night time diaper? Ew!! Is it just because he is in it for such a long time? Do I need to strip them again? What should I do?

This is common for night diapers. It happens with ours from time to time. You can try soaking them in vinegar, but what also helped for us was upping the amount of detergent we used for the diapers. Stripping will help, but to keep it away, you need to find wash system that will maintain the cleanliness. Ammonia can build up if you use too much detergent or not enough-in our case it was not enough detergent.

I switched detergents and periodically do some extra hot rinses, and our morning diaper smell went away. I have 2 cotton dipes that still retain odor for some reason, but the rest are good to go. So I agree that it is likely a washing issue.

My general wash routine is this:

cold rinse, no soap
hot wash/cold rinse with calgon (we have horribly hard water) and 1/3 of the rec'd amount of purex f&c (not very much at all)
hot rinse

The stink was worse all the time before we started with the calgon, so it has definitely helped a ton!! Shoudl I try more soap? Less??
