Hello fellow Utahns!!! Where are you living in Utah, and who is your midwife? I'm in SLC, and our midwife is Chris. You know they say that Utah has the fastest growing population in the country...now we see why

Mines a HMO and pays in full IF it's a CNM you can submit it yourself for CPMs but to get your money you will have to bug the crud out of them

I've heard wonderful things about Chris. I'm thinking I'll give Melissa Mayo a call next week, though, as I understand it, she is based out of Sandy... a bit closer. I'm so nervous to call, though! I don't know why! I was the same way with DS. I went to a CNM and waited for at least a month, but I don't want to miss out on a good midwife! I keep thinking "I'll call tomorrow." But I haven't yet...

I'm a doula, and I've seen Chris in action -- she is WONDERFUL! Heather too! I would be so happy to have either of them as my MW. I know there are a lot of terrific midwives in UT. You have a beautiful and vast selection on the Wasatch front. (luckyyyy!)

I'm having a hard time deciding on a midwife, but if they're all booked up, the decision might be made for me! LOL Not many of them attend births up North. I've contacted 7 MWs so far about meeting for interviews, so I guess we'll see how it all turns out.

There are so many Utahns in the DDC we could start our own mini-tribe thread.

I know, right? We still have days to go and who knows how many more could be joining us here...

I had my last son with Chris and she is amazing. She works with a partner now, but we haven't met her yet. Good luck finding someone up North. I love visiting Logan. My DH went to USU for a couple of years before transferring to the U, so we used to go visit his friends all the time. We should start a little mini thread...does anyone know how to do that?

I'm in Medford. In the MA page I found a list of hospitals and their respective c-section rates. I had my first at Winchester Hospital and it was birthrape, strait up. Remember Dr Rothchild who lost her liscence last year or so ago, her and she was the most "natural" dr there. My twins were a c-section at mount auburn. I wish I had just made the drive there with DS, it could have been a much better birth. I drove an hour from Haverhill to Winchester. Unless you have precipitous labor you usually can get to a birth center pretty quickly. Rockland isn't that far, esp if you hop on 95 and come in on Rt 2. Usually faster then 93. If I HAD to go to a hospital I'd drive in to Mt Auburn. I'm moving to Berlin in a few months which is at least as far if you go west.

Have you checked http://www.massmidwives.org/ ? I spoke with several MWs when I was preggo with my twins and I was quoted $4000 for a twin birth team of 4 MWs. I know it's alot of money still and Darn MA insurance for not covering anything but CNM and darn MA for not allowing CNM to attend homebirths :. Aftering having experienced the "joy" of hospital birth too many times I will never birth there again... It's UC for me!

I hate to crash the party uninvited, because I'm not really from Happy Valley, but I did get my undergrad at the Y and taught junior high in Orem afterward. Can I be part of the club as an honorary member???

Fyrebloom...I have a really good mommy friend who lives in Melrose. It's nice to know there's two of you up there! And thank you for your post. I'm glad you're finally getting to HB! Sounds like you've had some challenging birth experiences.

You're right, Cambridge isn't that far. So, I'm gonna check out the birth center. Although, I talked with Louise B. in Wareham, and have an appt. with her soon too. I am excited about that because she seems interested in exactly what I'm looking for. I am impressed, so far, with Tobey hospital also (where she attends). But you never know until you see it personally.

My first birth was at Newton/Wellesley hospital, attended by a wonderful midwife. I am really happy with how things went, but I am just looking for a more personal experience this time around. For example, I had never met that midwife before she walked into my labor room. She was awesome, but that could have been luck. This time, I want to see one midwife the whole way through, starting now. Plus the postpartum nurses at N/W were just okay. I really want to be sure that everyone involved is on the same page as us.

Anyway, I guess I have realized that there are other options for us besides HB, and as long as we are careful about our choices I feel really good about this.

Having just written that, I guess this discussion doesn't really belong in a HB thread. Thanks for all your help!

I read Ina May Gaskins book last night and was reading the stories and little parts of the story like tearing and pressure and ring of fire and all that I kinda started hyperventilating. LOL. It hit me, this is real! I read the book before but I was pregnant yet. While I definetly dont want a hospital birth and am defiently still doing a home birth reality is hitting me, can I really do this? I know I can, lots of women do. Anyways, enough of my freak out.
I am meeting with my midwife for my first appointment March 30th. I will be almost 11 weeks. Im excited, I know it will feel more real once I finally have a appointment and all.

Don't be scared Mrscompgeek! I had two homebirths after having two hospital births with epidurals. I was lucky and had no complications during my epidural births other than not being able to feel anything! Do you think I would continue to birth at home unmedicated if it were bad? It is wonderful in so many ways and you need to try and let go of the fear. Fear makes it hurt! During my first homebirth when those transition contractions started to hit I thought "what in the hell did I do, deciding to stay home?". I fought against my body for a few contractions because I was scared. I reached up out of the tub to my midwife and said, "it hurts!". She told me to "let the contractions flow right through me". Somehow that just made perfect sense and from then on it was like the contraction came into my body through my head and flowed through out of my toes. They just washed right over me and I stopped fighting them. My son was born after three more contraction and without me pushing. The midwife said it was fetal ejection reflex. It was the easiest birth I have had yet.

We'll be having a homebirth this time, can't wait! Never thought I'd say that about labor. We had planned one last time, but a lot of stuff happened (I can share the long gory details if you want ) and I was forced into an induction. Should have just not gone!

I look forward to sharing this with you all, and getting to know you all.

Well, DH is pretty much on board with a HB & he knows I'm pretty excited about the idea. I'm only coming up on the 5th week, but I'm anxious to start looking into my midwife. I would also like a water tub/birth too. My first two pregnancies and births were easy, so I'm hoping that holds true for #3. : DS start to finish was @ 3 hours, so it would be so much better just to stay put! Plus, I would like the option of DD & DS to witness the birth, if they so desire. They will be 6 & 4 years old, so maybe they could handle it?? Anyone had experience with this?

Congrats!! I feel you, I am hardly 5 weeks along and have 4 interviews set up this week. I am too excited to wait!!

From what I hear, if you don't force older siblings to be in the room, they do quite well watching the birth of a baby. My two year old will be able to walk in and out of the room as I labor.

During the birth of my fourth child, I had a 9 year old, 5 year old and two year old present. They all came in at the end to see the baby emerge. They thought it was great! I would show them some videos of natural birth and explain what it will be like so it isn't foreign to them. Make sure they know mom may make some funny noises, but it is just because she is doing such hard work. I'm sure they will be enchanted and want to see!

We'll be planning a homebirth, though I'm not sure if it will include a midwife or if we'll UC again.

My then 2yo ds was very much a part of my labor with my dd. He brought me water 3 times (and spilled it each time, bless his heart) and kept checking on me. He did awesome. My oldest ds was more than happy to keep his attention on the TV and didn't want anything to do with it.

Me too! I'm planning on my second homebirth with the same midwife as nearly 6 years ago. She now has water pools, so I'm planning on giving that a shot, at least for laboring...and possibly delivery too. I don't get to have an appointment until I'm around 12 weeks though- I'm looking at the first week of April! UGH! [so far away] :

I just had to come here and let everyone know that I just booked my first appt. with the homebirth midwife! I am so excited i'm actually shaking a little! I can't believe this is acutally happening!

Did I not jump in here yet? Another homebirther here! : My first was born at the Farm, I'm excited to have a baby at my very own house this time. Might try a waterbirth. I've found my midwife and she seems quite hands-off, which is what I want, though there are still a few things she wants to do that I'm not entirely happy about. Maybe I just won't call her until the last minute. And I want to have my son at the birth, he'll be almost 4.
