Three bills that aim to help pregnant or breastfeeding women have been assigned in the Kentucky legislature.
Senate Bill 61, which was referred to the Senate Health and Welfare Committee, would require Medicaid to provide smoking cessation for pregnant women who rely on the government health insurance program. Kentucky consistently has some of the highest rates of pregnant smokers in the nation.
House Bill 214, which was referred to the House Health and Welfare Committee, would establish fines for people violating a state law allowing mothers to breastfeed in any public or private place where they are otherwise allowed to be. A first violation would bring a $500 fine, while subsequent violations would bring $1,000 fines. These fines are higher than those called for in a Senate bill introduced in January that would charge $100 for the first violation and $200 for subsequent violations.
House Bill 151, which was posted in the House Transportation Committee, would allow pregnant women and parents of children under age 1 to receive so-called "stork parking" through temporary accessible parking placards.
