can they go in one? and how the heck do you keep them from falling out the side or just collapsing into a ball at the bottom of it? i think you would fold their legs up inside the carrier instead of letting them try to stretch around you, right? arent there huge gaps on the sides? thanks!

Yup! You've got the right idea. I first got my babyhawk when the little bugger was only 3 weeks old, and it worked great. I can't get their site to load right now, but if you go to www.babyhawk.com you can find instructions for a newborn carry.

The first couple times I wore my dd on my back in my MT (granted she was 7 months old) I put a roll up blanket under her bum. I don't know if that would work/is safe for an extended carry with a newborn. But if it were me and my kid I'd probably try it once to see if it might work. Then again, i much preferred the pouch for my newborn.

Yep, you can use it with a newborn...even in a back carry. My son was in a mei tai as a newborn. Here is a picture when he was a newborn in a back carry with a Kozy.

You can roll the bottom of the carrier, so its shorter and they don't get absolutely lost in it.
Also, with a newborn, you just tie the straps around their back, instead of under their bum - and VOILA! no more gapping sides.

I used the Babyhawk when my DD was a newborn and I totally loved it. Now, she's almost 7 months and I carry her on my back in the house and on the front sometimes when I'm out and about.

I started using a Baby Hawk MT when ds was 3 weeks old. I absolutely LOVE it! There is a slight gap in the side, but when it's tied correctly nothing can get through. Very occasionally I don't tie it quite tight enough and a few toes will stick out the bottom. It's really comfy for walking around in and best of all you get both of your arms back!!!

definitely. i've worn 2 newborns in MT's, even on my back.
my favorite way to tie the straps so it closes the gap and supports the baby's back without the knot slipping is to do a "lexie twist" - basically you take the straps behind the baby's back, and cross them over each other a couple of times (2 or 3), and then take the straps behind you and tie them (or in front of you, if you're doing a back carry). this brings the straps across the gap to close it, and also supports the back so they don't slump, and is better IMO than just tying the knot behind the baby, because sometimes it can slip up or down if you're moving around a lot but it doesn't slip when it's twisted and tied behind you.
it's also a great tie when the baby has legs out because the straps don't cross over the baby's legs (which can sometimes leave marks) and it adds a bit of support for the butt, which means less pull on your shoulders.
