children's books- I love the writing, but what next?

I've recently started writing-- short poetry-type stories for young children that I think would make lovely picture books if I could find the right artist. What are the steps that I should take to 1) find out if my work is actually any good and 2) find an illustrator whose style I like? I'm kind of excited, but don't want to get my hopes up prematurely.

Check out querytracker.com and agentquery.com for agents. Check their guidelines and start submitting! :Usually the illustrator is provided by the publisher--they prefer to hire from their own list, than to deal with someone "new". Good luck!
