Why do you CD? - Page 2

I started out doing it to for environmental reasons. Then I thought about the cost savings. Since then, I've discovered all the adorable options there are out there, and if I keep buying I'm not sure if it'll be a savings any longer! But the diapers have good resale value and so I expect to recoup much of my money. I also love that my baby has soft cotton & organic velour next to his bum instead of the yukky chemicals in disposables.

Editing to add that it's a bit of a problem, my addiction to cute diapers, since I'm also EC'ing. Eventually the idea is to be diaper free so I'm going to have to give it up at some point.

Thank you. It worked perfectly.

The look. That is pretty much the only reason we will be using cloth with the baby due in April. We used disposables with our first and never had any problems. No leaks and the only blow out we ever had was the first time he had prunes and that was the only problem ever. I do like the cloth aspect of it, but it is not what turned me on to cloth in the first place.

Human waste does not belong in landfills.
A friend loan us their diaper stash.
A toddler with bubble butt is the cutest thing ever. (Possibly even cuter than baby toes.)

I've become less concerned about the effects of disposible diaper chemicals. DH is a chemical engineer so we tend to not jump to chemicals bad. I think with a boy baby there might be some concern with additional heat from that much insulation.

All that said the day care we loved and was so convenient would not do cloth diapers so DD spent part of her day in diapers and now pullups. When we go camping we use disposibles because I just don't see having stinky diapers in our tent or heading into town every other day to do wash.

I just wish we had a better clothes washer so we could clean the diaper with just one cycle. They have to go through twice or they smell.

I am with KristyDi on this answer. The down side of going with cloth is having to do the laundry, but I find it a completely acceptable compromise. Cloth are just nicer. Would you want to go around wearing paper underwear every day?

We basically only do it for $$$ reasons.

It takes more time and effort than sposies, that is for sure.

The environmental aspect is hard to quantify... Yes it is less in the landfill, but the production of fabric has its own envrionmental effects, plus the oil (or nat gas) you use to heat water, the use of water, etc. And you can't only consider the cost you pay- government subsidies are so complicated that it is impossible to use price to calculate the true environmental cost of growing cotton, for example. That said, I do believe cloth is better for the envrionment than sposies, just not as amazingly better as some people would have you beleive.

this is my 4th child. all of them have worn sposies. until DD. she wore them until 10 mo. the little gel things are nasty, and you have to buy more and then THROW them away. it felt like such a waste of money. after reading an article on mothering on CDs i started looking around. It really appealed to me that they were healthier and better for the environment. but with the fibro i didnt want extra work. so i looked into cost and that is what got DH and I conveinced. of all things it was the saving Money part that convinced us. i love not having to buy $60 worth of sposies and wipes every month. we took out a loan (we are low income) to buy a GOOD washer that has a GOOD hot water cycle and then bought $350 worth of diapers. it took 6mo to pay off the loan. since then i havent had to spend anything on dipes or rash meds etc.

helpful hint: go with all natural cotton unbleached preferred. i bought http://www.kidalog.net/product_info....products_id=29. i love them. i had to have the inside panel made skinnier and had to replace some velcro on 3 of them. i couldnt afford anything better, but they work great. they will wick if you dont change them, but you should be changing them regularly anyway. if you can afford better go for it. i originally way BG3.0 or something but they were 2x the $. dont buy anything with synthetic materials, they hold onto stink and will irritate. like the gerber prefolds with absorbable pad. i do not like those and i only use them for night time. if you buy prefolds get some real chinese or indian prefolds with the thickest middle.

to wash mine, i do a cold prewash with purex free and clear, then a hot wash where i put 3 tbsp (for a full load) of white vinegar in a downy ball (the fabric softener ball that opens in the rinse), then it gets 2 cold rinses. works great. my water heater is also set at 135 deg. i know you are not supposed to turn it up above 120 deg but the dipes werent getting clean. my clean dipes smell great (except the gerbers). i also own 4 thirstie covers for overnight.

I think it's great that you're looking into using CD's! There are definitely some misconceptions, just like with anything, so it's smart to ask around! I started out using the disposables that were given to me as baby shower gifts and with two CD's I bought just to try them out. By the time I was almost out of sposies, I just couldn't use them anymore! It felt wrong to put "paper underwear" on my daughter, and the smell of the gel (I guess) kind of got to me. I also hate the idea of buying something and then just throwing it away after one use! Later, I realized that to use sposies would teach my daughter that we just throw things away after just using it once, too. I hate buying disposable batteries for the same reason! There is definitely the cuteness factor. I also like that I've bought my diaper stash and now I don't need to be regularly spending money on diapers. I haven't spent money on diapers since just before Thanksgiving. I've always enjoyed doing laundry, even hanging laundry to dry. I line dry them on sunny days this time of year and dryer dry them otherwise, but I feel like with line-drying them in the sun that cleanliness is not an issue. (They're clean after washing and dryer drying, too!)

I switched because of:
1. DS's constant rash
2. The gel stuff is nasty
3. Cloth must be more comfortable then paper
4. Its cuter
5. Environmental reasons
6. I hate running out of stuff (I'd rather do laundry then run to the store)
7. You're not supposed to dispose of human waste in the trash anyway

I've never had an issue getter them clean. If soiled clothes get clean in the wash, then so do diapers.

I honestly didn't want to do it when my DD was born, but every morning when I would get up and several times a day she would have those darn gel beads on her skin. It grosses me out, not to mention that it has made a significant difference with rashes. I now recommend it to everyone. I do our own CD laundry and it is not a big deal.

Thanks, everyone. When it comes time to do this, I will discuss it further with H and maybe have him go with me to shop around.
